I tried to do Windows update and clicked Install button, but got Error 8009001D 2 seconds after clicking Install. I didn’t turn off firewall or anything..just clicked Install after doing full image backup and Rescue media usb. Do you have any ideas to fix this ?

Try the standard fix mechanisms: SFC and DISM
      Then attempt the update again.

If it still doesn’t work, try WuMgr. It works on W8.1.

      cheers, Paul

I attached what I got since I don’t know what it means or how to fix. Also, would downloading and installing manually the Important Updates from Microsoft Catalog be option instead of using WuMgr ? I never used WuMgr.

Should I also try turning off Firewall then click Install Button to see it’ll fix issue?

Also, have attached Windows Updates List. I was told only to install Important Windows related Updates.

    • #2565459

There are 2 commands to run. DISM & SFC. They are shown on separate lines in the post I linked.

We don’t recommend letting Windows update drivers – if it aint broke…
      We do recommend important updates.
Optional updates are just that. I don’t install them.

      cheers, Paul

      • #2566118

I ran them as two separate lines, SFC result said there was corruption files and it was only to fix some of them. For details look in CBS Log, I Can’t tell what’s it trying to say. DSIM, this time around had hard time to start and would go to blue screen that says Windows ispreparing/ Don’t turn off computer. I had to turn off because it never moved passed that message.  Also,  When I ran with with SFC Command attached to it/as a 1st line command. DISM did scan and repair process was seen in bottom of window boot screen. What do I do now?  Let me know if you want me to attach CBS Log File.

I also tried turning off Firewall and Anti-virus, but that didn’t help.

You may need to reinstall over the top – after making an image backup.
          https://www.intowindows.com/how-to-repair-windows-8-1-installation/

I would run CHKDSK first – to be sure the disk is OK.
Open Explorer, right click on C:, Properties > Tools > Check

          cheers, Paul

          • #2566366

I ran CHKDSK and Disk is ok and I have Image backup. What is the difference between Troubleshooter Win Repair that Win 8.1 and the Repair Tool in your link?  Will both of them not erase my Programs and tec and instead just fix installation issues?

          • #2566367

            @Paul–T
Can you do a reinstall over the top with Win8.1? Where do you get the current(?) ISO? It’s EOL.

            • #2566529

The ISO is still available directly from Microsoft here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO

            • #2566580

Couldn’t I Download and Install Win Updates manually thru Microsoft Catalog or in Safe Mode or use Trouble shooter for update issues that Win 8.1 came with?? Before resorting to reinstalling Win 8.1 over top.

            • #2566589

Usually installing updates from the catalog will fail on a system with update problems, but maybe with a different error code.  Safe mode I do not think will help you to install updates. But if you like to try this is the final Windows 8.1 update from January 2023.

Microsoft recommends you install this SSU first: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5018922

              https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5022352

            • #2566603

Yes, I agree with Guessed. Download from the catalog the KB numbers indicated by Guessed. Install the SSU first (KB5018922). If prompted to reboot do so. Then install the Jan 2023 security & quality rollup for Windows 8.1 (KB5022352).

            • #2566857

I tried installing October KB5018922 version with title that’s without for Windows Server R2 got same Error but now saying DLL failed to initialize correctly.

My WU List has another October, but with one day difference and with different KB Number of 5018549 listed under Recommended list. Is this why getting Error still ?

Should I try installing in Safe Mode…even though in my quick search is tricking to Exit Safe Mode. Read person tried every method to exit and still stuck in safe mode.

I have been getting pop ups for awhile I’ll be on my laptop which don’t stop me from using laptop and I just close window. This one been lately the main pop up, Core.exe Application Error saying “The instruction at 0x19f922da referenced memory at 0x150c8328. The memory could not read, Click Ok to terminate the program.”

The other pop ups, nuPerfScan.exe – Bad Image saying “C:/windows/system32/Idn.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing program again using original installation media.”

              Pcdrcui.exe – Bad Image saying “C:/windows/system32/MSVCP120_CLR0400.dll Error status: 0xc0000020 ”

            • #2566873

Windows seems to be broken and no amount of fiddling with updates will fix that.
Until SFC and DISM run successfully you are wasting your time.

              cheers, Paul

            • #2567002

Sooo, I shouldn’t even try using Repair tool that fixes update issues and stuff without losing any of my programs and etc that Bruce Quick gave link ?  Or try to use Win 8.1’s own Troubleshooter Repair Tool in Action Center ?

….Or is the only option is to reinstall Win 8.1 on top my 8.1 copy like you mentioned previously?

            • #2567050

Bruce’s link tells you to run SFC/DISM. You did that and they show serious errors.

Repair is what you need to do. Which method you use is up to you.

              cheers, Paul

            • #2567052

Ooops, I meant to say your link or use Win 8.1’s Repair/troubleshooter option. Is either repair tool I won’t need to worry loosing my installed programs, files, etc…right  ??

            • #2567062

You have a full image backup that you can restore, so nothing will be lost even if it means reverting to the non-working system.

              cheers, Paul

            • #2567606

By accident, I tried to install manually the Updates for a x64 PC. But, when I tried the x86 version of the updates, I got back a message saying “Not Applicable”. I think it’s because in my WU List the dates of the Updates are slightly off and some of the KB #’s are different. Only the Jan 9th KB # is the same. Oct. 10 KB5018549 and Dec.12,2022 KB5021093. Sooo, do you think IF those KB #’s are in Microsoft Catalog and then those KB’s will work and be able to install successfully ?

Also, the Restoro App link that you gave me doesn’t download when I click “download” Button. When I click on Win 8.1 Troubleshooter for Updates, it doesn’t move past opening the first services.

            • #2567616

The ones marked x86 are for 32-bit computers. The ones marked x64 are for 64-bit computers.

If you computer is 64-bit, the x86 32-bit updates are not applicable for your computer.

            • #2567828

Do you think if I install my WU Versions of the Oct. and Dec, Oct. 10 KB5018549 and Dec.12,2022 KB5021093 that will fix the Error “DLL failed to initialize correctly.” ?

Also, do you have any free app suggestions for Windows Update Repair ? Since the option/feature that comes with Win 8.1 the process doesn’t progress past opening a certain service called crp or something starting with “c”.

            • #2567927

We are trying to tell you that installing updates will not fix your problems. You need to reinstall.

              cheers, Paul

            • #2568099

Oh ok, so then I should do what you said earlier and do a over top/open reinstall to get the Repair Option, right. If yes, then how do I stop the process of over top/open reinstalling if the Repair Option doesn’t show up ?

Also, I would like to keep my softwares, pics, settings, and files.

            • #2568178

The process does not start automatically, you need to tell it to do stuff.

If it doesn’t offer repair I would install anyway, you need to know if that will fix your issues.

              cheers, Paul

            • #2568292

Ok, if I end up needing to install anyway, how do I use my full image backup to only restore my softwares, pics, files and not my broken Win 8.1 version?…Do I need to my backup my files only with Macrium ?

Is there only one type Repair option/repair button or link to click? If not hen which type of Repair to I pick ?

            • #2568346

              You can’t.
You need to perform in in place repair to retain your apps.

              cheers, Paul

            • #2566886

The other pop ups, nuPerfScan.exe – Bad Image saying “C:/windows/system32/Idn.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing program again using original installation media.”

That’s Norton Utilities Advanced Scanner. Uninstall/reinstall?

              Pcdrcui.exe – Bad Image saying “C:/windows/system32/MSVCP120_CLR0400.dll Error status: 0xc0000020 ”

              That’s Dell Support Center. Uninstall/reinstall?

An online search using DuckDuckGo leads to a specific process for troubleshooting this error – a sort of generic “it didn’t work” error. The search string is

      microsoft update error code 0x8009001D

One of the more promising looking responses has this URL, but other than reading a few paragraphs, I don’t have the knowledge to really “vet” the instructions. It looks like it’s sound advice.

      https://www.bugsfighter.com/how-to-fix-windows-update-error-0x8009001d/

That offers a troubleshooting tree, not a “one step fixes it” solution – probably the only technical guidance you will find.

If it’s been 5 years since your last update, and if you have been using your PC, it could be many issues. You know, of course, that Windows 8.1 fell out of Microsoft support in January. I’m still using 8.1 Professional, and am prompted monthly to install the only one still offered, the one that searches for Malware, but I’ve relied on The Patch Lady’s guidance, keeping my PC pretty up-to-date.

In my world, and on my budget, a computer is “obsolete” when it no longer performs (safely) the jobs I need it to, but I don’t live in a risky world as far as my computing needs go. I oppose “subscription licensing,” and when Windows 10 was announced, I installed a blocker to prevent it from even attempting to load. I’m considered by some to be an “advanced” user, but I’m really only “advanced” in my knowledge of the specific applications I use. I have a local technical guru (an independent) whom I turn to when I encounter hardware/operating system issues – somebody like the ones who write in the AskWoody newsletter, but a short drive from my home.

I wish you success in solving this.
