Fake USB devices continue to be a problem. These devices claim to have higher storage capacities than they actually have. These devices are sold in many different places: from Chinese online shops to Amazon or eBay…

ValiDrive is a new free tool to test USB drives. It “conducts a data preserving, 576-region spot-check to test the readability, writability, and true storage presence of any drive of any size connected to any Windows’ USB port”…

Nothing new about ValiDrive, but it is a great utility.

It turns out that I already had Validrive. I originally downloaded v1.0.1.0 (94.3KB) on 2003-10-24.

Not remembering that, I downloaded it again as a result of this post. It’s still v1.0.1.0… but is now 104KB.

      Curiouser and curiouser. 🙂

The link at GRC.com indicates it was last updated on Feb 27, 2024 so, regardless of the fact the version # stayed the same, something was changed?

I took a look at the properties for both the old 94.3 Kb and new 104 Kb versions and discovered the difference is the digital signatures.

      94.3 Kb signatures:

        94kbVersion

      104 KB signatures:

        104kbVersion

So the larger size is due to the new sha256 digital signature that was added.
