I use Gmail as my primary e-mail application (I back up to Thunderbird via IMAP occasionally, but rarely use Thunderbird to read or send mail). I have it set up to send from a few other addresses that I own, and as far as I can tell that’s still working.

Recently I tried to set up a new ‘send-from’ address and was unable to. I couldn’t get it to authenticate, even if I used the Gmail SMTP server – although it’s possible that’s due to my own incompetence. 😉

However if I try to edit any of my existing, working aliases they also suffer the same fate. I believe that Google may have changed the behaviour of this feature.

    Am I missing something here?

I recently had a friend who could not send any email through GMail, using any email client on her computer.
But when logging in to Web-Mail, everything worked OK.

There is a security setting at GMail that was set too high, preventing this.
I went to Google Mail and logged in and changed the security setting and all worked OK.

I’ve been using GMail for years, with several accounts, and I had never seen this problem before.
I can only blame the person (not me) who set up her GMail account.

      Good Luck!

Thanks Doctor! It’s not every day you get advice from a Time Lord. 🙂
