I was transferring a large file to my brother via AnyDesk when the connection just cut:

    Goodbye AnyDesk.

You’ve just become persona non grata for your lack of warning and sudden disconnection.

It’s your service, sure… but the lack of warning and sudden change in terms of service is totally unacceptable. Perhaps my mistake in auto-updating… but goodbye.

      Hi Rick,

I never used that software and I certainly won’t now LOL.

Rats. I use Anydesk often. Stopped using Teamviewer a long time ago.

Been using AnyDesk for years. Couple blips here and there, but overall it’s been fine. UNTIL earlier this year when my license didn’t auto-renew as it should have. Their support was extremely sloooooow to answer. Had to tweak my stuff to login to remote systems. Once they did respond, they were very polite and professional and added the license. Really worried about what the future holds with them

What is the limitation of which they speak? I went to their site, and it did not mention any time limitation for the free version.

Abruptly cutting someone off like that is not likely to earn any friends or convince any people to buy the thing they had been getting free. It’s a bit of human psychology that we loathe having things taken away more than we appreciate getting new things, so even though they may look at the period of free use as a gift they can no longer afford, it has to be handled carefully if the goal is not to alienate the former users of the free version.

I have never used AnyDesk before, but I have used (and do still use) NoMachine. It seems to be a similar product, and like AnyDesk, it seems that home users have previously been allowed to use it free because we’re small potatoes compared to their business customers.

Lots of free versions are being eliminated or cut back… I really hope it doesn’t happen with Veeam, the only free (for consumers) online (the PC, not the internet) imaging backup program of which I am aware on Linux. Acronis has one, but not for lowly home users like me who don’t need an enterprise grade solution with an enterprise grade price tag.

I don’t know. The screenshot was the only explanation… which was no explanation at all.

Like you., I went to the AnyDesk site looking for limitations. I found a restriction if commercial use was suspected (which is fair enough) but the only thing I could find about time limitations in the free version was this: What can I do if I need more time for my connections in the free version?

This suggests that there IS a time limit… but I couldn’t find any further info.

This very recent AnyViewer article: Answered: Is There An AnyDesk Session Time Limit? specifically states there’s no time limit.

However, a Reddit suggests it’s only 30 minutes now… but I’ve used AnyDesk free for *much* longer than that. However, it suggests that upgrading to the latest AnyDesk client (which I did, to v7.1.13) introduces a time limitation per session… so I’m going to try using an earlier version.

Update: I reimaged (to be sure there were no fragments left of AnyDesk v7.1.13) then used an earlier version of the AnyDesk client.

It transferred the file to my brother without any further incident.

      Hope this helps…

      Turn off auto-update.

    • #2578881

Interesting! I still run the old 4.3 version in portable mode (not installed) on my machine. Client machines as a rule have the latest versions.

I never used that software and I certainly won’t now LOL.

I’ve been trying AnyDesk to/fro my brother as a possible replacement to TeamViewer.

TeamViewer is an excellent and very polished product IMO but has become a little too twitchy in its suspecting of commercial use… cutting personal users off with no warning.

(In TeamViewer‘s defence, I was cut off from using it so contacted TeamViewer support giving full details of my connections to family and friends [IP addresses, Partner IDs, etc.] and was whitelisted again within two days. I haven’t had a problem since. IME TeamViewer plays fair with you if you play fair with it and are open and honest.)

Don’t get me wrong… I quite agree with TeamViewer and AnyDesk that you shouldn’t try to pass off commercial use as ‘personal’.

I’ve been using AnyDesk with my brother for a few months now ‘cos his custom-built PC has GPU capabilities that my business-class devices can only gaze in awe at. He can transcode huge family videos in HD like my granddaughter’s 5th birthday a few days ago that my own devices just overheat and and BSOD at.

I’m pleased that I appear to have found the cause (auto-updating to latest version of AnyDesk) ‘cos otherwise I’d have to look into hosting a secure FTP site for family and friends.

I’m the current family custodian of our photos and videos (Google drive groaning at the seams but backed up locally). Each new family ‘meet up’, often people coming from far distances (for GB, tiny for US) even for a birthday, generates gigabytes of new content for curation… so these online collaboration tools are invaluable when you live half a country away from each other. (Christmas is a separate storage event… luckily, many months after Black Friday so I can buy yet another HDD.)

      Hope this helps…

FWIW, I’m using Anydesk v7.1.13 and had an long session (an hour or more) with a friend about 10 days ago.  I did not get bumped or throttled.

Free or paid for session? Details are important.

Whoops, you are so right.  Free session.

Whoops, you are so right. Free session.

I’m pleased for you. That was not my experience. Updating was where it all went wrong for me.

Reverting to an earlier version fixed it for me. It’s a shame in a way. I don’t misuse AnyDesk… I’m a purely personal user… but, much like TeamViewer, I got caught out.

      • #2578935

Maybe I just got lucky because I had updated my free Anydesk to v7.1.13 just before I started a session.  The auto-ending of a session may not start until a new upgrade to v7.1.13 as been used a few times as a kind of “trial”.

Also, in thinking about it some more.  I had to manually close anydesk and start a new session about 3 times of the course the 1 hour+.  I wasn’t booted, it was an intentional close on my part.  However, that may have reset the “free user end timer” so I wasn’t booted.

Update: Two fairly small uploads to my little bro have completed without issue. The current 10GB upload seems to be OK so far.

The current 10GB upload seems to be OK so far.

And completed fine with no problems.

    • #2579223

Also, in thinking about it some more.

I was also thinking about it more.

I’ve used AnyDesk for hours trying to sort issues out and I’ve never had a problem. Maybe there are different rules for file transfer mode compared to remote desktop mode?

My understanding from TeamViewer is that it drops the connection to its backend servers once handshaking has established and verified a connection. Unfortunately I can’t find that information again to repost at the moment.

I suspect AnyDesk may potentially be different… and perhaps keeps a watchful eye over connections.

All I do know is that my use is definitely personal and that I’m pleased to have found the reason why AnyDesk failed and how I restored it.

      Hope this helps…

After uninstalling AnyDesk I found & deleted at least 26 registry entries (Search your registry for ‘Anydesk’), and a bunch of Anydesk folders from the file system (search for anydesk). In other words, IMO, they have a crappy uninstaller. Many people leaving Anydesk now because of lack of security (they were hacked in Jan/24 see https://thehackernews.com/2024/02/anydesk-hacked-popular-remote-desktop.html ) & because they are now requiring ‘free’ users to register and beg for a license. Good riddance Anydesk!

For the moment I am using Google Remote Desktop – it works fairly well. AD was better for file transfers** than GRD and installing & setting up GRD should be easier than it is.  Years ago I used TigerVNC & UltraVNC. I’ve seen positive reviews about RustDesk too.

I prefer the MS RDP but not all the machines I access have a Pro edition of windows hence the need for an alternate client. Also, when I need to share the desktop I use an alternate client although I suspect the MS Remote Assistance would allow desktop sharing – I just never had the time to figure it out. (Anyone want to confirm that?)

FWIW I installed a Tailscale network and used it to Remote desktop into a W11 machine about 2500 miles away, it’s pretty cool, no need to open ports in the router as it acts as if the remote machine is on your local LAN.

**I use FTP for my instances where a larger number or size of files is to be transferred. On that W11 machine I installed the Filezilla FTP server & again it was dead easy to connect – no need to translate WAN to LAN IPs etc.

Moderator Edit: to remove HTML” – Sorry if I didn’t follow the rules. But I’m confused because the only html I remember was the link to the hacker news story & that is still there. I looked at https://www.askwoody.com/posts-and-privacy/user-account-general-rules/ and did not see anything there about html either. Can anyone please clarify for me?

I would prefer not to give the moderators extra work!!

If you copy/paste from, say, Word (anything but a text editor), the pasted data comes across with the formatting (expressed as HTML). The way around it, is to use something like Notepad (a plain text editor). Otherwise, you can use the “Text” tab to paste into, or the “Paste as text” from entry box menu to remove the formatting.

          Comes with the job 🙂

If you are pasting from say Word, using keyboard shortcut CTRL+SHIFT+V will paste as plain text with no formatting artifacts.  However as a test….

I’m pasting this from Word using “CTRL+SHIFT+V” so there should not be formatting as HTML .

Edit:  I summitted this post and checked it.  It appeared to be clean.

Ahhh…that makes sense, thank you. About a year ago I installed a small utility called PureText – its only job is to convert the clipboard to plain text on a click. I think I heard about it from one of the AskWoody newsletters, shoulda used that! 🙂
