I posted a request about the power button on the Palm forums, and the response was to change a value in the registry. This led to an afternoon of discovery. 
But I digress. Here are some links for future reference:
(1) Registry Editor.
Although its last release was way back in 2002 (!!), PHM Registry Editor is widely recommended as the best free registry editor: http://www.phm.lu/products/PocketPC/RegEdit/%5B/url%5D. The download page recommends an MSI installer which includes all the CAB files and detects which is best for your phone. It didn’t work with the Treo 800w (WinMo 6.1), so I had to research the right CAB to install, which turned out to be the download labeled “Pocket PC 2002,2003 (ARM/PXA)” which pushes the CAB file “regedit.Mrln_ARM.CAB”.
(2) Registry Settings.
There are a few sites that document these. For my purposes: Treo 800w Registry Tweaks Consolidated at PPCGeeks and TreoCentral Forums (registration required for downloads) seem the most useful.
Owners of HTC phones can take advantage of http://xda-developers.com/%5B/url%5D.
Note: The installation procedure for a CAB file probably is not obvious, but here is a short version for the uninitiated.
- Connect your handheld to the PC and let ActiveSync start up. Click the Explore button on the ActiveSync toolbar to open the My Documents folder on your handheld. Note: If you’re meticulous about organization, you can create an Installers sub-folder.
- Open a Windows Explorer or My Computer window to the folder where you downloaded the CAB file. Usually, you can just drag and drop a CAB file from the PC to the device. In some cases, drag and drop doesn’t seem to work, in which case you can right-click and copy the source file, and then right-click and paste onto the handheld. You’re done on the PC side.
- From the Windows Mobile Start menu, fire up the File Explorer, and it should default to the same folder. Launch the CAB file to install the program. After that, you no longer need the CAB on your device, but you might keep it on your PC and/or a storage card in the unfortunate event that you need to do a “hard reset” and return your device to factory configuration.
