• Help with WUMT

(Please forgive me — I’m new to the forums and I hope I’m providing enough information.)

    Windows Specs:

    Edition: Windows 10 Pro
    Version: 22H2
    Installed on: ‎10/‎3/‎2020
    OS build: 19045.3803
Experience: Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19053.1000.0

Can someone provide detailed instructions/settings for using WUMT so I can control updates myself?  I’ve always paused updates on my computer until I checked the MSDEFCON level and when things are looking okay, I would un-pause and allow the updates to resume.  However, after this last fiasco with KB5034441, I’m nearing the end of my pause date.

I’ve been reading the forums for days and I realize there are other programs to manage this, but I thought WUMT looked like it might be the easiest for me.  (I do realize that because I have updates PAUSED, that when I scan for updates, KB5034441 will not be shown, and I think I know how to handle this particular situation from reading the forums.)

It’s more about moving forward.  I guess I don’t understand how WUMT works since it’s not running in the background and only runs when I execute the file.  (I did notice that since I ran WUMT, I now have this message on Windows Update:  *Some settings are managed by your organization.  And there have been updated policies — presumably from the settings in WUMT? (I attached screen prints of both the configured update policies and the settings in WUMT.)

    So, my questions are:

    1. What should the setting be under “Automatic Updates” in WUMT?  It’s currently set for “Notification mode”.
    2. Does this tool keep any updates from installing until I scan for them and choose to install them?
    3. Do I run this every month after Patch Tuesday and after I’ve gotten the OK from SB that updates are okay to install?

Thanks in advance for the help!

As you are running Pro we recommend you use Group Policy to control updates.

      See this KB article.

Ummmm….yikes. That article is WAY over my head and more than I feel comfortable tackling.

Am I not able to use WUMT to control updates? And now I’m worried I’ve changed things by running it and not sure how to get back to letting Windows just handle things and go back to just pausing them.

This is a home computer and although I have some technical knowledge, I don’t feel I understand enough in that article to be comfortable making those changes.

I really was looking for help in using WUMT, if possible…

There are screenshots at the bottom of AKB2000016 that show where the settings are and what they look like for both Group Policy and the Registry. Both of those tools have a tree structure like File Explorer.

It really isn’t any harder than finding a file on your computer. It’s the fear of trying that holds most people back. You can always ask for help here if you want to try. and you can always reverse any changes you make.

Okay, so I bit the bullet and made the changes as noted in the screenshot both at the bottom of AKB2000016, as well as another reply you posted (same instructions) from this topic:  https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/kb5034441-and-the-wushowhide-tool-questions/#post-2625040.

As you stated, it wasn’t hard to do.  I considered switching to wushowhide instead of WUMT, but like the interface better with WUMT.  I’m going to restart my computer and then unpause updates (because they’re still in pause mode), with a metered connection on, so I can run WUMT and hopefully hide the offending KB50344441 before it has a chance to possibly fail.

One final question, just to make sure I don’t have conflicting options set in Group Policy and WUMT, are these the correct settings for WUMT:

            wumt_settings

            Thanks for all the help!

When you resume updates, the updates are going to download/install.
Have the “2” (notify download/install) set in Group Policy.
              Disconnect from the Internet.
Resume updates – it will fail.
Let it retry on it’s own (do not click “Check for updates). This may take a day. When it retries on it’s own, the updates should remain in the WU queue.
Then you can use WUMT to control Windows Update – hide what you want, install what you want. With the “2” set, the updates won’t d/l install unless you click on “Download” (NOT “Check for updates)

I don’t use WUMT, I use wushowhide. But the settings in the screenshot look like what you want to do. The Notification mode should let you choose when.

              So, here’s what happened…

I made the changes as noted in your posts to Group Policy.  Before restarting, I went to Windows Update to change to a metered connection.  Interestingly, it doesn’t show that Windows Update is Paused any longer (although I know it is because in advanced settings it’s showing it’s still paused until Feb.3rd).  In any case, it shows that I have an update available to download as shown here:

              wu_in_settings

So I started WUMT to see what that showed, and that particular Security Intelligence Update for MS Defender AV ending in 3052.0 was already installed as shown here:

              wumt_installed_updates

However, WUMT is now showing another Security Intelligence Update for MS Defender AV ending in 3057.0 as “Pending for download” as seen here:

              wumt_scan_for_updates

So, now what?  First, it seems that MS Defender updates — either to the program or the security intelligence updates — are downloaded and installed even when updates are in a paused mode (which is great for protection).

But, now I’m not sure how to Unpause/Resume updates since there’s no button to do that.  Am I supposed to choose the “download” option from the Windows Update screen, even though WUMT is showing that particular update as being installed?

And, I’m assuming because updates are paused, I’m not getting the problem KB5034441 showing up so I can hide it.

Any idea on how I should proceed?  TIA!

Defender updates install anyway, even when Paused.
I am not familiar with WUMT. I use wushowhide.
But in the Tools Forum, there should be a Topic on WUMT, as it’s been around a long time. I uses the Windows Update Service to search for updates, as do Windows Update, WUMgt and wushowhide. So if the WU Service is paused, none of those tools can/will find updates,

            • #2633476

Thank you, I do understand that if WU is paused, none of the tools will find the offending update.  My question was, how do I go about unpausing/resuming updates since that option isn’t showing any longer as seen here:

              wu_in_settings-1

Do I just change the pause date in advanced settings to today’s date (if that’s even possible)?

            • #2633479

              See #2633440 above.
Download the Defender update, that is the only one in the queue.
              Then use WUMT.

            • #2633480

Thank you, and I will be sure to follow those steps once I resume updates.  But the question remains, I still don’t see HOW to resume updates on my own — without waiting for the date they were paused until (Feb 3rd.)  I don’t have the normal “Resume Updates” option as I’ve had in the past.  All I have are the options shown in the screen print.

I’m so sorry, but am I missing something here?

            • #2633481

Okay, just saw this update to your post.  I’ll try that first.

              Thanks!

            • #2633482

Awesome, that worked.  I now have “resume updates” available on the Windows Update screen.

Now I’ll try the steps in #2633440 above…

I guess I don’t understand how WUMT works since it’s not running in the background and only runs when I execute the file.  (I did notice that since I ran WUMT, I now have this message on Windows Update:  *Some settings are managed by your organization.

I use WUmgr but they work the same.
Both are running Windows update when launch. They don’t run in the background.
Both won’t present updates when Windows Update is paused.

Some settings are managed by your organization means you have changed Windows setting using GPedit ,registry fixes, pause…
You can click to see what changes has been made.
WUMT doesn’t change settings unless you blocked Windows Update.

The answer to 1, 2 and 3 is YES.
