Firefox browser’s Default setting for DNS over HTTPS will automatically switch between DNS resolvers – eg: “Cloudflare” for Regular ISP connection and “Turn OFF” when connected to a VPN to allow usage of the VPN provided DNS resolver

Edge DNS setting allows to select a DNS over HTTPS resolver, but making a specific  selection fixes that selection for both Regular ISP and VPN usage. (eg: if select Cloudflare as DNS resolver, Edge uses Cloudflare for both Regular and VPN connections. If make no selection, Edge uses the connected ISP’s DNS resolver (Regular ISP resolver for Regular connection, VPN’s resolver for VPN connection).

Anyone know if there is a setting to make Edge function similar to Firefox (eg: allow selection of a specfic DNS resolver, say Cloudflare when using the Regular ISP and still allow usage of a VPN provided DNS resolver when using VPN without having to make manual setting adjustments each time?

First off, there are two things going on here:

      1. whether a browser uses old/insecure or new/secure DNS
      2. whether it uses DNS from your ISP or from your VPN

So, confusing. You can test things using the many tests shown here, my favorite is the one from IVPN. Also, if you expect to use a DNS provider that has its own tester page, that is always the best.

The VPN client software has much to say in this regard, it is not just up to the browser. Some VPN client software gives you control over the DNS used when the VPN is active.

My experience has been that a browser configured to use new/secure DNS will always use it, VPN or not. But, confusing. Firefox has DNS options that other browsers do not, so extra confusing. If you really want to see how confusing DNS can get, see the Long Explanation of DNS in the page linked to above. Test and test.
