I have the crimping hardware and the cat 5 cable. I’m looking for a good web site that tells you step by step how to make your own telephone cable using RJ11 jacks. Can anyone help?

Now let’s see here – you have some 4-pair cat5 cable, normally with RJ45 plugs on each end. But you want to crimp on RJ11 plugs for telephone use. Now for a POT (plain ole telephone) you use one pair, the white/blue pair in cat5 usually. If you look at the pin holes on the RJ11, you will see that it has 4, but for the POT you only use 2 pins, the CENTER pins. So you poke the white/blue pair in the center holes of the RJ11, and grab the crimper. Make sure you use the same wire colors in the same pin holes on each end, and also make sure the outside pin holes are vacant.

Now some newer ‘electronic phones’ use two twisted pairs. If so, use the white/brown pair from the cat5 cable, poke them in the RJ11outside pins, observing the same color pattern on each end.

Looking in the end of the RJ11, mentally number the pins 1,2,3,4. Then the white/brown pair would go in pin1=white, pin4=brown, and the white/blue pair go pin2=white, pin3=blue, then do it identically on both ends.

Now, if you want to run cat5 data down the same cable, split off the other two pair, and crimp them in an RJ45 plug as advised above.
