So I’m running a program, Firestorm viewer, that works great on Win7 but when a new version comes out and they end up blocking the old versions, I have to update. The program is a Second Life viewer and one of the things it does is save your chats in a file called C:\Users\Terry\AppData\Roaming\Firestorm_x64\knobs_slade.  If you know a lot of people or run a business in Second Life that’s very useful as it keeps a copy of all your chats with all the people you talk to, to look at later if needed.

So here’s the problem. You would think that their viewer updates would ask if you want to keep that important file, but instead they overwrite it!  Not even a question of whether you want to keep it or not!  Intstead they tell you keep a copy and replace it in the file above if  it gets wiped and you care.

So, I figured out how to copy that file by opening windows explorer, opening that file above, grabbing all the contents and putting them in a folder on my hard drive..  but now, when the “upgrade” wipes the above file out, how do I put my saved copy back in that folder?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I suggest you make ZIP copies of the Firestorm folder before and after the upgrade. Right click on the Firestorm folder and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. Rename the ZIP file to reflect old and new versions.
Then you can copy whatever files you need.

This post has a good description for moving your chats: https://wiki.firestormviewer.org/fs_chat_transcripts

      cheers, Paul
