    Hi,

After creating a fresh image of the PC I followed my usual routine of mounting it, playing one music track – Eartha Kitt this time – part of a video, one folder of photos and a few Word and Excel docs. Apart from that brief check, I rely on Macrium’s verification of the image.

But today there is no option to unmount the image, thus no way to remove the external disk in the recommended manner, just a message that the drive is in use. Unwilling to leave the ext. drive permanently attached to the pc, I shall use brute force if necessary, but am concerned that doing so might corrupt the new image, or worse the whole drive. There is another drive, but that image is two weeks old.

Would removing and reinstalling Macrium Reflect be likely to remedy the situation, is MR itself corrupted, or should I just detach the ext. drive and hope there is no harm done?

    Suggestions welcomed.

    George

Does “no option to unmount the image” mean that you’ve opened File Explorer and right-clicked the drive icon for options?
My imaging software (I’ve never used Macrium Reflect) presents an option to unmount a drive when I do that.
In my case, right-clicking the icon also offers me the option to “eject” the drive.

Yes. Normally there is an entry for Macrium, which allows it to be unmounted, but it’s no longer there. I’m going to bed now, so will shut down and keep my fingers crossed, metaphorically at least.

The backup file is opened for reading and is very unlikely to be in the middle of a write. If you shut down the PC and then remove the drive you will have no worries.

      cheers, Paul

You can also log out of Windows, remove the drive and log back in.

      Thanks Paul,

Reconnected the ext. drive, mounted the image, checked a few files, everything OK, except still no option to unmount the drive. However, rebooting the PC did the trick.

I shall remove and reinstall MR when I have some spare time, but it’s not urgent, especially now I know how to deal with it.

      Thanks a lot.
