how to keep text formatting? (2003/SP2)

There’s probably a simple solution for this thing which has been bugging me for a long time. Every time I copy & paste into a text box, the text formatting defaults to a specific font & size even if I’m copying & pasting within the same text box. Is there any way to maintain the original text format?

Possibility 1: use Edit | Paste Special… and select the Formatted Text (RTF) option.

Possibility 2: paste the text, then click on the smart tag that appears at the end of the pasted text. Select the option to keep source formatting.
