I’m not very famliar with the Excel charting functions. Could somebody walk me through (or point me to a source) which tells me how I can take a list of items in a column and make a pie chart? For example, say I have a list of the following values:

    USA
    CANADA
    USA
    USA
    USA
    AUSTRALIA
    AUSTRALIA
    CANADA

I want a pie chart which shows me USA 50%, Canada 25%, Australia 25%.

    Thank you!

You could create a pivot chart based on the table.

      • Insert a column heading (field name) above the table, say Country.
      • Click anywhere in the table.
      • Select Data | PivotTable and PivotChart Report…
      • Select PivotChart Report.
      • Click Next twice.
      • Click Layout

        That worked beautifully, thank you.

By the way, when I modify the original data, the pivot table & chart doesn’t change. Is there a way to perform a refresh so that the changes are reflected? Or do I need to recreate from scratch?

Is there a way to sort the pivot table? Right now my data looks something like:

        A 2
        B 5
        C 1
        D 12

I’d like it ordered by the total. If I right click on the field, there is an Order option where I can move the order one by one but is there a way to sort the entire table at once?

        Thank you.

Click on any cell in the Total column, then click the Sort Ascending or Sort Descending button on the toolbar. The pivot chart will be updated automatically.
