I have been having problems with my mouse and my wife’s mouse on my desktop and her laptop, which are only a few months old and were both bought with windows 11 installed. The experience happens daily, and is such that desktop icons cannot be selected and then double-clicked to start the programs associated with the desktop icons. I have been using windows computers for decades, and this has never happened before windows 11. It did not happen when the computers were bought, but has been happening within the past month or so and is rather frustrating. It is almost as if a delay has been built into either the operating system or the mouse driver that prevents selection of desktop icons for starting programs. It happens every day, but not for the whole day.It starts happening after the login process has finished. It is most likely related to windows 11, and perhaps the 22H2 update that happened recently. Has anyone else experienced something like this with windows 11 recently?

I bought my wife and I two new computers with windows 11 installed within the past month or two. She got the laptop, and I got the desktop. Both have the intel core i7 cpu, with 512gb SSD on the laptop and 256gb SSD and 2tb hard drive on the desktop. Not long after everything was up and running, I discovered that some programs took a bit of time to start after double clicking on the desktop icon. It turned out that the problem was that when my mouse hovered over the desktop icon to start the program by double clicking it, the icon was not being highlighted and therefore was not available to start the program by double clicking it. Sometimes I have to go back and forth over an icon before I can start a program by double clicking the icon. Does anyone have an idea about why this is happening? I have never experienced this situation before on any of my computers or laptops.

Does this happen all the time? Just after the system is booted? Have you checked your mouse settings for movement or double-click speed?

      • #2549949

It seems to happen every day at least once. I only generally logout during each night, and only reboot when asked to do so. Windows 11 says the mouse pointer speed is 10, the pointer speed is medium, halfway between slow and fast, and the double click speed is just over halfway between slow and fast. But if hovering the mouse over an icon does not “highlight” the icon, I don’t see how the mouse can double click said icon. By the way, it is also happening on my wife’s windows 11 laptop, and these computers are both new and came with windows 11 already installed.

Can you reduce the DPI sensitivity on the mouse?

You can essentially do this by disabling “Enhance pointer precision” in Control Panel | Hardware and Sound | Devices and Printers | Mouse | Pointer Options.

Just saw your post. The “Enhance pointer precision” box is not checked.

It seems that there is some kind of delay when I try to run a program by double clicking the desktop icon once I have logged in for the day. It happened again today, but only once. I’m using the logitech M310 wireless mouse on windows 11, just like I used it on windows 10.

I think I would like to roll both our desktop and our laptop back to windows 11 21H2. Can I do that without losing installed software?

        • #2559031

I think I would like to roll both our desktop and our laptop back to windows 11 21H2.

I bought my wife and I two new computers with windows 11 installed within the past month or two.

I added the extra emphasis above.

Since you say that you bought them new within the last month or two, they very likely came with 22H2 out of the factory and, if that’s the case, it might not be possible to roll them “back” to a state they’ve never been in before.

However, if you do find a way to install 21H2 on them, you’re going to have to jump through a couple of hoops to keep them on that version, since Microsoft will be trying to push you to 22H2 at every turn! The settings you’ll need to keep them on 21H2 are well documented here on AskWoody.

Your questions seem to be a continuation of questions posed by you in an earlier thread. Is this the same computer with the same difficulties? What tasks do you want to perform?

      • Roll back from Win11 22H2 to Win11 21H2
      • Get mice to function

Here is your earlier thread with some answered questions:

Yes, it is a continuation of the other thread. I got no response after a few days, so decided to start a new thread. Presuming you have read my latest post and my previous post, do you know of anyone with windows 11 that is having a mouse problem like I described? I’m not sure why I’m having the same problem on two windows 11 computers, both HP products, but I wondered if it would have anything to do with the windows 11 update to 22H2, which the patch lady has been saying is not ready yet for consumers to buy. What are your thoughts about all of this?

    • #2559849

It’s best to say on the original post.  What is the brand of mouse? Wired or wireless? This late in the game you can’t roll back from 22H2 to 21H2 without  a total reinstall.

Did you buy a new mouse? I always recommend buying a new mouse when I buy a new computer.

The mouse is a wireless logitech M310 mouse. I have used it for several years with windows 7 and 10, and now with windows 11. It has worked well until now. It is also being used on my personal laptop, which is windows 10, and it works well on that laptop. The problem with the mouse is unique to either windows 11 or interference from one of the installed programs.

What driver are you using for the receiver/mouse? Is there a later one on the Logitech site?
      Have you tried other mice?

      cheers, Paul

The mouse is using a driver version 6.0.45.0, dated 10/14/2020. As far as I know, it is the most up to date driver version. I have not tried another mouse, since this one has worked so well for me before. Also, I just noticed that I have two mouse drivers mentioned, both with the name “Logitech HID-compliant Cordless Mouse”. Shouldn’t I have just one driver for the mouse?

    • #2559929

If the problem only occurs once per day, it’s not likely to be a mouse issue.

      • #2559985

If the mouse is not the problem, then would windows 11 be the problem? This mouse problem is new in several decades of using a mouse with windows.

        • #2559988

If the mouse is not the problem, then would windows 11 be the problem?

What antivirus is being used, and what startup programs have been installed in the last month?

          • #2559993

I’m using windows defender for both antivirus and firewall. The biggest program installed recently would be surshark vpn. It has to be adjusted for some websites, but works well for me.

    • #2559987

Did you make sure you have the latest Logitech drivers? I’d strongly recommend the link Susan listed above.

I just looked at Susan’s link, downloaded the software, but the installer says I already have the latest version of the software. It also seems that my M310 mouse is not listed when I try to find it in the list during a chat session.

When I fresh installed 11 on my workstation I had the same type issue. I had a nice Dell mouse probably 2 years old or so. Worked fine in 10. After a couple days of playing around uninstalling drivers, re-installing, plugging and unplugging into different ports, testing mouse on another windows 10 system and it working fine, I was ready to put my 10 image back. Before doing so I grabbed a new mouse I had laying around and plugged it in. The mouse was actually older than the one I was using. Has been working fine now for about 2 years.

IDK, maybe 11 just doesn’t like some mice!

      • #2560004

Perhaps I just need to try another mouse :). I will buy another wireless mouse and see how it works with windows 11. Thanks for your note about this.

      • #2560027

When I fresh installed 11 on my workstation I had the same type issue.

You were unable to double-click desktop shortcuts for minutes after startup but then it was fine for the rest of the day?

        • #2560034

Sporadic throughout day. At first I just thought it was me just not paying attention. Didn’t do it all the time. After a couple days I realized something wasn’t right and started troubleshooting. After replacing the mouse (wired) no more issues. I have not noticed it on the other 11 machines I have and fooled with. IDK and too lazy to plug the old mouse back in to test 🙂

    • #2560020

The biggest program installed recently would be surshark vpn.

      Try without:

“Surfshark really slows down your computer when you first turn it on.”

Disabling Surfshark Launch on Startup greatly reduced my boot time
