How to share a large video in a secure manner

Hello,
I have a large video of a trip that I want to share to a limited number of people who were on the tour, preferably with individual user IDs and passwords – Privacy considerations and all that which is an issue here in Canada.
It’s quite large so I would like to have it stream through a web browser rather than having to download the whole movie.
Unfortunately, I don’t think YouTube provides this service. From my understanding, I think that I can only have the YouTube video as private (invited list but no individual user ID password, or limited which means, I think, that the person has to have the actual web address.

Perhaps Facebook? You can share stuff on FB with only specified people.

I’m not sure about size limitations. Also, I’m not so sure about privacy, either. If I was very concerned about privacy issues, I wouldn’t post it on FB, because the way FB makes its money is by selling the information posted by its members.

How large is the video? You can use SkyDrive to upload files up to approximately 2GB.

Has SkyDrive waived the file size limit by that much or is there a special way of gettting a large file onto SkyDrive? The last time I checked file size limits, it had been increased from 50 MB to 100 MB. Tell me more tell me more if that’s not true.

Streaming or downloading makes no difference because streaming is just watching as it downloads; it’s getting the beast into the cloud with limited upstream bandwidth that’s the trick, even if you can find a place for a file that size. I’ve used yousendit.com in the past, seems to work well and can accommodate a file up to 2 GB in size with a certain level account.

Though I don’t believe SkyDive is capable (hope to be proven wrong), online storage does seem the way to go, here’s an article with a large list of possibilities.

Skydrive does have a file size limit of 2GB.

I recently installed the desktop application and told it what to synch, the only thing it baulked at was my Outlook.pst file which is ~3GB. I zipped into a file of around 500MB and it went up quite happily.

I’ve had a look on my own Youtube settings and can upload videos of up to 15 minutes without giving away any more of my privacy.

What size & length is the video you would like to share?

Yes, that seems the way to go without setting up my own domain with controlled access.
I did do a test and I was able to upload an one hour 30 minute video of our trip photographs successfully to YouTube.
As far as sky Drive goes, It looks the same as dropbox and other cloud storage services.

Ya, it just depends on what level of quality you want. YouTube is going to re-encode anything you upload there. Original quality and format can be maintained from a cloud storage share but then you’ll have to be mindful of filesize limits most likely for a video that’s 90 minutes long. You must already have an established YT account with a waiver on the time limits?

I regularly share a large amount of content with a penpal in China. Classical Music Documentaries, mostly. A lot of content providers are blocked to him, and many file-sharing options seemed to be blocked to him as well. We can torrent but it goes very slowly. I think DropBox was blocked when we tried it. I think SkyDrive worked. Currently what works well for us is a site called SendSpace. I use WinRar to break large files into .RAR files that are 295 MB (because the current SendSpace filesize limit for free users is 300 MB), and WinRar can password these files (7-Zip can do the same with it own 7z files, I believe) and I have installed the SendSpace Wizard program with makes it easier to drag-and-drop and automatically upload the files to SendSpace. I can have it so that SendSpace will send to the end users the download links when the upload completes, or I can go online, highlight the filenames and send the links in sets. The links allow the files to be downloaded like a Rapidshare file. I haven’t run into an overall Quota like you do with DropBox, but the links expire after 30 days (or maybe after being idle 30 days), while DropBox is indefinite. At the moment I have earned myself up to a 6 Gb quota at DropBox; meanwhile I have 16 GB of content sitting in SendSpace. Once the file is downloaded by my friend he can use WinRar or 7-Zip (which can also extract RAR files) to enter the password and extract the full-sized video file. I did once send a SendSpace link to someone in the US and it wouldn’t work for her, perhaps because she worked for a school system and it was filtered; Dropbox worked for her, however. I think the option to password these RAR or 7z files could be the answer to your security concerns. I also use settings in WinRar to hide the original filename of the content. I have had the occasional upload failure and I think once one of the files became corrupted sometime during upload, but so far so good with SendSpace.

I don’t have a perfect solution, but Vimeo.com worked for me. I was able to place a large video on there and make it password protected. I’d send that password and the link to the video to the people that should be able to view it.

Why do you need individual accounts if they are all looking at the same video?

I was distinctly unimpressed with all of those sites with the possible exception of the one you highlighted. They don’t have much of a business plan and are limited to one gig uploads but that is probably good enough. Just don’t trust anything there on a long-term basis; they might literally disappear overnight. IMO it’s still a much better option to share from a more established and capacious data storage service; one you know your upload will be available from for as long as you wish.

I use Opera browser with the Unite feature enabled. You have to use a version previous to Version 12 browser since they are not developing these tools any longer. However it works great. I use the file share feature that lets you set aside a portion of your disk space as a file server folder. You can put your video in the folder and there is a weblink for the folder. You just email the weblink to your friend and he can download the video. There is also an upload app, picture share app, and personal webserver app. I have used these applications for three years at my business and have never had any problems. It does require a quick setup in Opera to identify you as an Opera user but it’s pretty easy.

I’ve used this numerous time for files up to 2GB, mostly large video files. It’s free and secure. http://www.wetransfer.com You don’t even have to register. You just accept the terms and conditions, select your file and enter the email addresses of the person(s) you wish to receive the file. When the file is uploaded, the service sends a download link to the recipients and they download the file. Upload is kind of slow depending on your bandwidth but everyone has told me the ~2 GB files download in less than 20 minutes.

Only problem there is that one needs synchronous up/down Internet connection, or at least a reasonably fast upload link if the download link is off the scale like Google’s gigabit (or whatever it is) connections in KC. My connection is .25 megabit up, takes about a day just to get 2 gigs uploaded so I only want to do it once and share it many times from a cloud storage location.

When I need to do that and having my own domain, I simply ftp the file to my domain then copy the link – eg, http://www.domain-name.com/filename and send that to the people I want to know it is there. It doesnt appear on my web site as it isnt a part of the web site HTML coding so unless you know or guess the exact name, you cant get it without that link. While that is good for me with my own domain, you can achieve the same thing (depending on video size) by using the allocated space your ISP gives you with your account or by going to places such as Yahoo, opening a free account and uploading it to there and sending the link from that uploaded spot. You ought to see if a good video compression program can reduce the file size without badly affecting the video quality first, though.

Ya, ADrive was top of the list in the article link I posted. What one really needs is an effective measure of the upload resumability, the best ones can pick up an upload at any point that it was paused for whatever reason. The poor ones start uploading the file from scratch if interrupted.

ADrive has been around for years, never let me down. Everything goes Bonk once in a while, it is an imperfect world. At broadband speeds, 1-2 GB files don’t take that long…
