It gives me more flexibility in colors and actual icons, customizable, than Windows. The colors are stored in “C:Documents and SettingsMarcApplication DataArcticLineFolder MarkericlColors.icl” I’m still running XP and want to upgrade 7 than the free upgrade to 10. From what I understand 7 store the “User” information in a different location. Can I change that to “C:Documents and SettingsMarcApplication Data”? is that a good solution? If not how do get around this.

The short answer is ‘no’.
Colors.icl is an icon library file (hence the .icl extension) and whoever wrote and packaged Folder Marker coded the app to look for this file in a particular place, i.e. in the %appdata%ArcticLineFolder Markericl folder.
%appdata% is a standard (for Windows) folder variable that in Windows XP translates to C:Documents and SettingsApplication Data and in Windows Vista and above translates to C:UsersAppDataRoaming.
If you move any file or folder from wherever the parent app/program expects to find it then the program is 99.9% sure not to work. (I hedged my bets here with the remaining .1% in case the programmer built error-checking in, e.g. if Colors.icl not found then use MSIEXEC to repair the installation. 🙂 )

AskWoody LoungerJune 29, 2016 at 12:25 am #1568923The easiest way I guess to do this is after installing 7 copy and create “C:Documents and SettingsMarcApplication DataArcticLineFolder MarkericlColors.icl” using the existing data. That will keep the current icons working and let the new install be in the default location for 7 “C:UsersMarcAppDataRoamingArcticLineFolder MarkericlColors.icl”.
Thanks

AskWoody MVPJune 29, 2016 at 4:39 am #1568933Common sense suggests this is the way to do it. However, just in case the programmer of ‘Folder Marker’ had a different installation path for Windows 7, just install the program in Windows 7 then check before copying.
This is just in case the programmer decided that the ICL folder was superfluous and that .icl files could be stored and found in the ‘Folder Marker’ folder or that in Windows 7 the parent folder could be called ‘FolderMarker’ (with no space) instead. Again, this is very unlikely but best not to make assumptions.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 29, 2016 at 5:57 am #1572196I have Folder Marker on Win 7 (as well as Ico Folder, which might interest you as well), and it is certainly installable, but I think it is also one of those self-contained things that stay out of the registry. Just copy the contents of the folder itself to Program Files (x86) and put an icon on the desktop (linked to the executable). Google them and you’ll get plenty of hits and ideas.
