One of my customers has a very interesting problem concering attaching files to web mail e-mails. There are 3 hardware identical PCs on the network each running Windows 7 Pro with all updates including Internet Explorer 10. On one PC if you try to attach a file IE errors and will not send it. This occurs on more than one web mail service and different accounts on each service. However, the same accounts used on the other PCs work correctly and send attachments without any problems. I narrowed the problem down to IE 10 by using another browser on the problem PC and the other browser correctly attaches files to the e-mails. There must be some setting that recently changed in IE 10 on the problem PC but I can not locate any difference in settings. Are you aware of what is causing this and a fix for it?

      Hi Jerry,

Go to ‘Programs and features’ untick Internet Explorer 10, wait till it completes then reboot. Then return & tick it & again reboot.

I had exactly the same problem. I am using Hotmail through Web Outlook on Win 7 home 32 bit system, and I tried this suggestion of unticking IE10, rebooting, then reticking and rebooting again and it worked, strange it didn’t work for other people.

I might try by starting IE in safe mode. Quite often there might be an add-on that is not performing properly. If it then works as expected you can start adding add-ons one at a time to see what happens. I would also delete aff TIF and Cookies in case an old web page is causing a problem.

I might also clear the DNS Cache.

On one PC if you try to attach a file IE errors and will not send it.

      Won’t attach or won’t send?

What does the error message say?

It shows as an attachment to the web mail but errors when you tell it to send. The attachment is not sent and there are no error messages. I will try the other recomendations as soon as I get back to the customer’s office. Thanks

I have this problem with IE10 on win 8 Pro x86. In this case I am using Gmail and as soon as I select the file for attachment I get a message from IE10 informing me that it has an error and must close. It does a recovery restart and I am back exactly where I was except for the attempted attachment. I get around the problem by using Outlook 2010 to do the email composition and send.

I will try the suggestion by Roderunner and report back in. The problem is 100% reproducible so testing is easy.

I tried the advice from Roderunner and unticked IE10, rebooted, reticked it and rebooted and IE10 almost did not know it had been gone. Unfortunately the suggestion was no help. IE10 still crashes when doing an attachment using webmail.

I also have a win 7 Pro x64 machine that has IE10 installed and it crashes too when trying to attach a file to webmail. However, the attachment actually shows as attached before IE10 falls over. IE10 also shows some crash info which may be useful to the more technical people here. See it below.

I did not try uninstalling IE10 on my Win 7 machine.

A little more on the subject. An Exception Code: c0000005 is an Access Violation.

I have disabled all add-ons and that does not help.

I wonder if this is related to the problem I’m experiencing where IE is changing the extension of each file by substituting a “hypen” for the “period.”

    • #1415493

I have a fix for this problem. It is called Windows 8.1 Professional and IE11. I am using the 64 bit flavour but that is probably irrelevant. I think it is IE11 that matters.

Disable all third party extensions. Click the Tools menu, choose Manage Add-Ons. Disable all extensions.
