    Hello all.

    When I click a short cut on my desk to to a web page.. It opens IER6 but does not go to the web page. Rather it shows the shortcut text reference as

    In Outlook Express clicking on a web page link opens nothing.

    It seems I have some screw loose…

    Any thoughts……How do I fix this?

      Looks like a messed up file association. Run the attached program for “url” and post your results.

          You have a messed up URL registry entry. The FileType should be “InternetShortcut” — not “ft000002″.

          There are usually some Shell Extension entries there are well. For example, my URL key looks like this:

          [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.URL]
          @=”InternetShortcut”

          [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.URLShellEx]

          [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.URLShellEx{000214EE-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
          @=”{FBF23B40-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}”

          [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.URLShellEx{000214F9-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
          @=”{FBF23B40-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}”

              Ugh. There are no Shell Extension (Shellex) entries — only the default line is there. Well, for now just change the (Default) value to say “Internet Shortcut”. That will fix the basic association. Then, let me try to figure out what other entries might be helpful.

              Your going to have to restore the entire key. I checked into most of those entries and they all look pretty benign:

              {000214EE-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
              IShellLinkA

              {000214F9-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
              IShellLinkW
              Links to PSFactory Buffer and ActiveX Interface Marshaling Library

              {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
              IExtractImage
              Links to PSFactory Buffer and ActiveX Interface Marshaling Library

              {FBF23B80-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}
              Links back to URL

              {CABB0DA0-DA57-11CF-9974-0020AFD79762}
              Links back to URL

              {00021500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
              Links back to URL

              I attached the URL file from my XP computer — try to Merge that into your registry and then try again.

              Also, what happens when you “Open” the url from that box? Does IE open the page?

            • #794954

              I guess I lost you. Does the Open button work?

              The fact that you are seeing the “Download Dialog Box’ implies that there my be a problem with your “InternetShortcut” registry key as well. The EditFlags may be set up to dislplay that dialog box — something that is not desirable. I could tell for sure if you re-ran my ExtAssoc file after modifying the (Default) value to “InternetShortcut” — and posting the results here. Regardless, I have attached my “InternetShortcut” registry key from my WinXP box. You may need to Merge that into your registry also to further repair the association.

              Lastly, what caused the problem in the first place?? You should likely be looking for some virus or other malware that mucked your association up to begin with….
