I created a flowchart using Word97 clip art and drawing tools (arrows, text boxes, etc.) on a horizontal page.
I now want to insert this into a document on its side so that I can have it vertical but still retain its length and the headers and footers of the document I’m inserting it into.
I thought about putting a section break in and just changing the page setup of the one page to horizontal but that puts the header and footer on the sides of the page (when the manual is printed) rather than the top and bottom.
Since we reviewed earlier that you can’t rotate clip art or grouped drawing objects I seem to be SOL… am I?
thanks
have fun

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 4, 2001 at 11:50 am #1774763You can have a landscape page & still have header/footer appear above & below the flowchart. I copied this tip for tables, but it will work with flowcharts.
1. Position cursor where you want the landscape page to start.
2. Choose Insert|Break|Next Page and click OK.
3. Press Enter to create a new paragraph mark.
4. Again choose Insert|Break|Next Page and click OK.
5. Without disturbing the cursor, choose View|Header and Footer
6. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click Page Setup. Then click the Layout tab and uncheck Different First Page.
7. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click Same as Previous until the button appears OFF (not depressed).
8. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click Close, to return to the main body of the document.
9. Choose View|Normal.
10. Position the cursor between the two section breaks entered in Steps 2-4.
11. Without disturbing the cursor, choose View|Header and Footer
12. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click Page Setup. Then click the Layout tab and uncheck Different First Page. Then click the Page Size tab and click Portrait.
13. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click Same as Previous until the button appears OFF (not depressed).
NOTE: SKIP STEPS 14-18 IF YOU DON’T MIND HAVING A LANDSCAPE HEADER AND FOOTER.
14. Delete the material in the Header. Or Cut it to the clipboard for re-use in Step 17.
15. With the cursor positioned in the empty header, draw a textbox, using the Textbox tool on the Drawing toolbar. Size and position the textbox as desired. Remove the border from the textbox, if desired, by right-clicking its border and choosing Format Picture.
16. With the cursor in the textbox, choose Format|Text Direction and choose the desired text direction and click OK.
17. Enter desired text in the textbox. Or paste the contents of the clipboard into the textbox (see Step 14).
18. Repeat Steps 14-17 for the footer.
19. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click Close, to return to the main body of the document.
20. Choose View|Page Layout to return to page layout view.
21. Place desired content on the landscape page.Positioning of the text box can be fiddly but you only have to do it once in respect of any given template. Thereafter you can select the empty paragraph marker in the ‘true’ (landscape) footer of your landscape page, copy it to the clipboard, go to your new landscape page and paste it into the landscape footer: your ‘portrait’ text box footer – and contents – appear.
Hope this helps.

I have a sneaky suspicion that your procedure is for W2K. Am I right? I say this because of step 16, “Format>Text Direction”. There is no such animal that I can see in W97…or have I missed it? or even misunderstood?I’m working with W97 here at work. I do have W2K at home though… do you think there would be a major conversion/corruption issue if I did this in 2K at home then converted it to W97 here?
thanks

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 4, 2001 at 11:31 pm #1774864Your right, I do have Word 2000 & never used 97. But I could have sworn that you could rotate text in a textbox in Word 97. Perhaps it’s in a different location (a menu or toolbar button). Check the help for rotate text or something similar.
Let me know if this works or not. And whether Word 97 rotates text.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 6, 2001 at 1:39 am #1775082Word 97 does indeed have a means to rotate text within a textbox – comes right up on the Text Box toolbar – the blue A with what looks like arrows – click on that and the text rotates 90 degrees, click on it again – another 90 degree rotation, etc.

GuestJanuary 10, 2001 at 12:57 am #1775331The biggest problem was that I used a combination of over 35 different objects including clip art, arrows, text boxes and other drawing objects to make a “flowchart” that just fit on the horizontal page. I know Viso probably would have been better but I’ve never worked with it and I simply didn’t have the time to learn the program to make it look how I wanted it to.
I was just short of using Snagit and insert it as a graphic. When I tried that just to see, the quality went in the gutter. (until I found out the above worked)
Ruth, I did try to rotate the clip art but it just wouldn’t let me… I ungrouped it from the text box and looked all over for the rotate or flip command. I’m using W97 by the way…is there an option on the toolbar I’m overlooking?

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 11, 2001 at 4:54 am #1775444That turns out to be a really good question.
The best distinction I can see is that they essentially function identically when you are working with objects in the drawing layer.
However when working with a picture in the text layer (inline object), Disassemble Picture will “ungroup” the object, while Ungroup is unavailable. (BTW when used in this way, the ungrouped objects are converted from inline to floating objects.)

GuestJanuary 10, 2001 at 9:28 pm #1775381You could also avoid the issue by not inserting running heads on landscape pages. Should simplify the solution…
From my (admittedly distant) past as a production editor, I recall this as an accepted style; running heads on a rotated page just confuse the reader.
The journals I worked on all omitted running heads and footers from pages containing landscape tables and figures, and this was much cleaner.
In Word you’d still need to put the section breaks in to isolate the table within it’s own section as you originally proposed, but just turn off the headers in the formatting for that section and forget about rotation.
Regards.

GuestJanuary 11, 2001 at 10:24 pm #1775574You know, that’s not a bad idea at all.
I guess I got so enthralled in if it could be done rather than does it really NEED to be done. I blame it on one of my co-workers who said, “Well, can you do this?”
It does look a lot better without the header and footer… especially since I’ve moved everything horizontal, even the heading.
Thanks for the all too simple suggestion.
I always said that being a writer, I don’t need to trouble myself with these things… that’s why God made Editors and spell check!!
