Hello all. I have a 2019 ProPlus license and am setting up a new laptop.

I’d like to maximize free space on the SSD and keep background processes to a minimum.

So it would be great if I could install -only- Excel (and maybe Word, but honestly Google Docs is good enough for my word processing needs)

I did a search and found a tutorial for an older version of office, but I don’t see anything about the 2019 version.

Does anyone know how to do this?

    Thanks in advance!

You need the Office Deployment Tool:

      https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49117

And a configuration file, which you can make at:

      https://config.office.com/

Once you have the configuration file, you need to run the installer using the setup.exe file from the deployment tool as follows, assuming that you saved the file as config.xml:

      setup.exe /configure config.xml

You may need to specify full paths if it’s not working correctly.

That’s only possible if you use the Office Deployment Tool with an edited configuration file:

      Thank you steviebops and b!

I watched the video and then went to the MS config website mentioned by steviebops and created the XML file (see attached)

I am a student and I normally download from onthehub so I don’t actually know my license key, but I think I figured it out. At the very end of the download URL that starts with:

c2rsetup.officeapps.live.com –> there is a “token=” with a 25 character alphanumeric string that looks suspiciously like an Office key, so I used that in my configuration file.

I went ahead and downloaded the full ISO called “Microsoft Office 2019 ProPlus 1808 (Build 10730.20102) RETAIL.iso” .. it’s the 2018 release, so it’ll need to update several times, although it looks like I can find the ISO file for the most current Office 2019 PP release here:

Any advice on what email address to use for installing Office? I’m afraid that if I use my school email address than someday, once I am not a student anymore, I might have trouble reinstalling Office. So I was considering using my Gmail address.

Or as long as I have the Office key, I will be fine?

Thanks again to you both. I love this forum. I’ve been reading AskWoody / WindowsSecrets for years and love the crowd around here.

        Good question. I’m not sure.

I would have assumed you needed to use the school account in case you need to reinstall:

For example, it’s possible you’re signed in with a personal Microsoft account instead of your work or school account and the version of Office you’re trying to install was provided through your work or school.

Check what account you’re signed in with, it may be the wrong account

But perhaps try you Gmail address first and make sure Office will activate?

Good idea, try the Gmail account first and see what happens. I’ll do that.

First I need to install the new SSD (SK Hynix P31 – supposed to be power efficient) and RAM (16GB garden variety Crucial 3200MHz) .. Then to install Win10 LTSC .. then will try this Office install.

I’ll be thrilled if it actually works to just install Excel (absolutely needed) and Word (good to have in general)

It would be interesting to see if my student’s trail from College website ..to.. JourneyEd.com ..to.. Onthehub.com ..to.. Microsoft carries my original email imprint.

I found a solution to this issue, as many people only need Excel these days.

There is a way to download an Excel-only installer, directly from Microsoft.
