I found this recent posting by Russ Cooper of NTBugTraq fame to be quite an interesting read. It’s worth checking out for all Windows users.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerMay 16, 2003 at 1:57 am #677058My post above (Can you believe this?) is I believe a link to some Windows Update beta testing. I’m kinda scared of that. I have had Auto Update turned off from day one, because I DO trust MS to err on the side of fancy marketing vs trustworthy computing…… Time seems to be bearing this out.

AskWoody LoungerMay 17, 2003 at 2:05 pm #677356Update and Microsoft …….. now there’s an oxymoron !!!
The only thing Micro$oft seems to be able to update is it’s bank balance and the number of new bugs in their software !!! Mr. Gates, et al seem to be of the opinion that the world is their private beta lab and we should be grateful to pay for that privilege. Redmond rivals China when it comes to stonewalling and denying that a problem even exists…. let alone fixing it !!! I think we’d all be willing to pay a little more for software that worked right the first time out of the box. And even be willing to live with that software a little longer while something better was developed, that also worked right the first time. They can’t even fix or patch something so that it works right the 2nd, 3rd or 4th time !! Many have lost faith in their patches and updates. How long until we lose faith in their products altogether ???-

Funny thing from the Office 2003 beta newsgroups: With the Beta 2 Refresh coming out, the original Beta testers (the ones who got in the program for free) will be able to download the Beta 2 Refresh. However, the group that paid $20 to try out the software won’t be able to get the Refresh.go figure….

MemberMay 19, 2003 at 6:17 pm #677917I’ve given up on any recommended MS updates … simply because I don’t have the time or inclination to do the necessary research and checking on each “critical” update that rears its ugly head.
I feel that my work pc is the agency’s responsibility. My own home pc is virus protected, has Zone Alarm Pro, Ad Aware, and SpyBot S&D. All are carefully upgraded with THEIR current definitions, etc. Any critical data is backed up to an external Kanguru 60 GB USB Hard Drive.
Maybe I’m going to get bitten with my head in the sand, but I’m NOT a full-time security consultant or update de######. So … I’ll scrub the C: drive and start over with the operating system and reinstall the programs if necessary. It hasn’t been “broke” for quite a while, so I’m not “fixing it” until it does get broken.
Guess the point of this rant is that I have zero faith in Microsoft to know what they’re doing with updates, so I’m just opting out.
