	PATCH WATCH Java update comes sooner than expected
	By Susan Bradley It’s discouraging when an application update is compromised before we’ve even had the chance to applied it. Oracle has released Java 7 Version 13 hot on the heals of Version 11 to fix a zero-day exploit — and numerous other security flaws.

Unfortunately, applying the update breaks the java needed to play at pogo.com Those of us who have paid for
the play games are getting a little nervy as it’s been a month or so since it worked for some. We’re suggested
that Pogo contact java so that they might reach a java that won’t break the game. Of course we are ignored
because we’re only the players. lol :rolleyes:

I use JavaRa to uninstall. (per web site instructions below)

First try uninstalling the version of Java you have currently and then do the following which should remove all older versions of Java:

Please download JavaRa and save the file to your desktop.
• Right click and Extract All and a new folder called “JavaRa” will be extracted
• Once extracted, open that folder and run JavaRa.exe with the picture.
• Select your Language which is English I assume.
• Click Search For Updates
• Select Update Using jucheck.exe
• Click Search
• If a newer version is found, allow it to be installed
• Uncheck the Google Toolbar option. (if you don’t want the Google tool bar)
• When complete, click Remove Older Versions in the JavaRa interface and allow it to proceed
• When that is complete, click Additional Tasks, then select Remove Useless JRE Files and click Go
• It will now begin to remove older versions.
• Exit the tool when complete.
Reboot Your Computer.

If there are many older versions, or if there may be nonstandard locations for Java Runtimes, due to programs using copies of the libraries (among other possibilities) JavaRA is an excellent tool for doing a complete Java cleanup. I keep it around for just such situations.

H & R Block uses Java and I had problems filing my return because of it. This morning I went to java.com, selected “Do I have java?” and they check you out. My answer was that they are not sure. I then uninstalled the program Java, went back to java website and downloaded the correct updated Java. There is a 32 and 64 bit versions and they figure out what you need. I use both 32 and 64 bit IE 9.0 in Win 7 and my 32 bit browser never shows java add-ons. I am waiting a program called “Java Manager Pro” and I hope it isn’t free!

One big issue that we have with Java is that Cisco seems to write code in Java for practically everything they have and a lot of times it isn’t forward compatible with the next Java version. (Don’t know if this is an issue with Java or Cisco’s coding but I would expect the latter.) A real common occurrence is the ASDM which is the GUI for programming and monitoring their ASA firewalls. It happens all the time that a Java update will break the ASDM. Cisco comes out with an upgrade of the ASDM shortly afterwards, but these cost money and if our customers don’t have a service contract with Cisco, they don’t usually want to upgrade. Besides this, if we need to make configuration changes immediately, sometimes there isn’t time to acquire the upgrade for the customer which forces us into using the CLI. The solution has always been to lag behind on Java updates. With all the recent security issues, this isn’t practical anymore. Currently, we are tied to Java version 6 which is way behind.

The recommendation is confusing, because as of Feb. 7, the Java’s site identifies its current release as “Version 7 Update 13.”

I’m guessing the article and current download on the Java site refer to the same version, but I’d rather be sure than having to guess.

Every time java has a new update (7-13 most recent 3 days ago) it breaks pogo. Am following instructions
from jharley first. If a no go, will return. I had used revo uninstaller last time.

For those who have specific program applications (as opposed to Web Apps) which need to use older Java Runtime Updates, this isn’t the end of the world. Nearly all of the JRE threats in the current headlines are related to using Browser Plugins associated with JRE. Disable the Browser Plugins and the rest of Java is not as dangerous.

Except for Internet Explorer, which has Java baked into it in many ways.

I followed thru step by step. When I went to Pogo.com, my java game demanded that I install the latest / greatest java.
It was 7-13. And once more I can’t use it.

I was hoping that perhaps this site might point out something I had overlooked, but not so.

Just a piece of trivia to address Susan’s version comment… even number updates are feature updates, odd numbers are security/fix patches.

JRE 1.7.0_12 would have been a feature update (if there was one), hence 1.7.0_13 is the next security/fix patch after update 11.

Woody Leonhard states that Java is integral to Internet Explorer. Of all the major browsers, he states that IE is the only one where you cannot completely stop Java from running without jumping through a lot of difficult hoops.

You can avoid all the crapware additions by downloading the latest version of java from:

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

The same download handles 32-bit and 64-bit, but does NOT include any additional software/toolbars/etc.
