Maybe you could write a post on this
with your clear, no-nonsense style. When and where
is JAVA a real potential vulnerability problem.
(under Win? Linux? Android? ,in-browser? just running a Java applet?).Q1
Does Java also make PCs vulnerable,
if they run Ubuntu 12.04 Linux?
What about Android tablets?Q2
How to tell if
a – my Linux PC has Java installed and
b – any installed programs are using Java?A little confused here,
as you can tell…lots of questions.
And I’m not alone.thanks for any pointers, Woody!

GuestJuly 18, 2014 at 9:47 am #52668As a Linux user, I can tell you there are security issues with Java installations in Ubuntu Linux. We have to keep our Java up to date as much as Windows and Mac users.
Java is an independent code base from Windows, so its security issues are a thing apart from general Windows issues.
Bottom Line for Windows users is that your programs probably are not Java dependent. Getting rid of Java is probably a good idea for most Windows users. At least go inside the Java Control Panel and disable Java and Java Plugins in browsers unless something you’re doing online demands Java (few things need it).
For Ubuntu users there are some programs which depend on Java, so we can’t just dump Java. Our updates are quick and happen in the background, so we have few worries, as these updates seldom go neglected for Ubuntu. The Ubuntu Software Updater will handle these and all other important updates.
Windows users who keep Java need to use either Secunia PSI or else keep watching here and at tech websites for announcements when there are Java security updates.
