    Weird little issue.
Retrieved and applied this Service Stack Update KB5044380 “2024-10 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems” which required one restart, after which I no longer have access to the Start | Rightclick menu which I am used to using quite frequently.

Is this a known thing, anyone else have it? I found no prior format topic on this patch.

What is another way to get to the same menu?

    Thanks!

AskWoody does not recommend installing Preview updates.
Suggest you uninstall that update and see if it resolves your problem.
Refer to Susan’s Master Patch List for recommendations on whether or not to install updates. (Button in light colored Menubar at the top of the site.)

Thank you for that, PKCano. So, maybe installation of the SSU isn’t what caused the problem. Uninstallation seems to have gone smoothly, but after reboots the missing admin/settings Start Menu right-click issue persists. I tried a DISM restoreHealth; not sure what else to try.

KB5044380 is a Cumulative Update Preview, not a Servicing Stack Update.
      Did DISM find any errors?
Also run in an elevated Command Prompt (run as Administrator) to check System files:

      sfc /scannow

      Is this a known thing?

It is if ExplorerPatcher is installed and that hasn’t been updated in the last month.

I should have mentioned that; I expected Explorer Patcher could be the culprit, and b has pretty much confirmed. Thanks!!

Note, I did try the very recent Explorer Patcher pre-release and the annoyance persisted.

So is there an alternate way to open the admin/settings start menu? Win+something?

Update: I had a pending restart I was unaware of, after having uninstalled the patch that I had wrongly inferred (from a WUSA description) was a servicing stack update. After completing the uninstall by performing that second restart, my (right-click) Start Menu returned. In all, an annoying little experience, but thanks for the guidance with it, and in general. I love you people.

            @deafkon

Congratulations on getting your system back in fully working order after the reboot!

BUT, this behavior you experienced suggests that it may very well return when you install the monthly security update for 23H2 that will be released on November 12th, as most changes/new features in the preview updates are also automatically rolled into the monthly security updates that are released on the second Tuesday of every month.

Because of that possibility, it might be a good idea if you can report this behavior to the folks who brought you Explorer Patcher to see if they can reproduce it and include a fix in a new release in the near future. See if there’s a feedback type of link within the program that will reporting this issue easier.

Thanks for that, Bob. I don’t update right away nor do I do so automatically when MS issues system updates on Patch Tuesdays; I generally wait at least a week and then check around – mostly here – to see the Defcon rating and read about use-case impacts, by which time there’s often an Explorer Patcher update although I wait until after there’s a new symbols download available before applying that. I haven’t really run into Explorer Patcher problems and, in this case, I think my issue was more related to prematurely using WUSA to grab what I mistakenly thought was a Service Stack.

The Github repo forum for Explorer Patcher indicates the dev is pretty well ahead of the curve on compatibility and update risk issues. I am completely onboard with the taskbar customization/preservation that I am afforded by that software and would strongly recommend it to the like-minded.

I will heed your warning in any event! And thanks again.
