This might seem minor but it drives my Type-A personality crazy. How can I get the system icons [My Computer etc.] to stay in the location I put them. I usually put them in the lower right hand corner with their titles hidden by the task bar. I keep anything I am working on in the upper left corner. I also expand the task bar so that they shortcuts are on one line and running programs are on the next. [See Attachment] I

      Hi Sherry,

To answer question #2 first: check out post 252256 and try the steps outlined there – that may address your folder views. I don’t have the facilities to test it on Windows 98, so I can’t promise you that it will work.

In regards to your icons, does this only happen with Internet Explorer? If you open other applications, you don’t experience this problem?

      Hi Sherry:
With regard to your first issue, I haven’t see IE force icons to rearrange. However, I have had it happen. In Win 95, it would happen regualrly…I hear the hard disk whir & the desktop would repaint itself several times a day. On Win 98, it only happens if I change resolution or crash. Then it will reset to it’s default…whatever it thinks that is.

In any event, search Google for WinTidy95. It’s a wonderful freeware program that can memorize & restore numerous icons with a mouse click. I got it years ago from PC Magazine, but they now charge a subscription fee for their utilities index & the ability to download. I don’t know if there are any mirror sites, but I couldn’t find any.

Try removing the ShellIconCache file from the Windows folder and restarting your machine.
