launch programs

Hi All,

Years ago, probably on the old Lounge, I posted a request for a “shell” to launch programs. At the time, nothing existed so I was working with another Lounge member to create something. We got some way but the effort stopped.

So I’ll ask again.

Imagine you come in in the morning and you have a task to do. That task may require several programs to be opened (Word and Excel), a web site to be opened (maybe with a password), etc.

I’m looking for some type of program/shell that will allow me to execute it and all those programs/sites are opened. If a site needs a password, I can store the password in the program/shell and have it enter the password for me. I would imagine that this program/shell would need to be replicated since there could be numerous combinations of tasks that I do when I first come in. This could also be used for my activities involving opening several program/sites to support a particular lecture in class.

Any thoughts?

PowerShell (built-in), AutoHotkey or AutoIt can all do this automation for you.

For example, see Powershell : Automated Login to All your Websites in One Go to give you an idea of how to use IE to open websites that require a login.

The rest of the PowerShell script would just be calls to the various programs you want opened, e.g. to open Word 2010:
