Libraries in Open & Save Dialogs

When I first got Windows 7, I couldn’t figure out what Libraries were. It was very confusing. However, once I did figure it out, they are actually very helpful.

I have a laptop that I share with my wife. We keep all of our Pictures, Videos & Music on the Public User side and some of our documents.

Windows 8.1 didn’t show Libraries in Explorer but I figured out how to get them back, thanks to WindowsSecrets. However they still don’t show up in the Open or Save dialog boxes. I have to go to Computer, Users, Public, etc. Is there a way to get them back in those boxes? Thanks.

Don’t know why they don’t for you but they seem to show up for me in Win 8.1 Pro w/MS Office 2010 Pro.
Here’s an example from Excel 2010.

To have Libraries shown in the navigation pane, an option needs to be set, in the File Explorer options:

If you Right Click in an open area directly above the Navigation Pane you will see the options.

This seems to be the quickest way to accomplish this.

You can just add the Public folder to Favorites also; I use them extensively as temporary network data repositories and it’s a tad quicker there unless the libraries have been confined to the public folders only.

Thank you all. I have already set it up so that I can see Libraries in File Explorer. RetiredGeek, I am using Office 2003, too much clicking in the newer versions of Office ;D, and don’t expect libraries to show up there. However, when I use other programs, both Microsoft and not, Libraries are not listed in the navigation pane.

Until I figure out a way to get it back, I think FUN downtown has the best idea, I will just add to Favorites.

Ok I just finished fairly extensive testing on my Win 7 laptop w/Office 2003 Pro.
Although you can get Libraries to appear on the Places Bar they are next to useless!

As you can see the Libraries show up but show no files (there are no Excel type files here).
If you change the dialog to All Files you get:
35833-LibrriesWithFiles
Ah, now the Libraries show. However if you try to open one of the libraries to drill down you get:
35834-OpenLibrary
As you can see this will get you nowhere and in word it actually will open up the library as an XML file!
Just an FYI in the Save dialog you get:
35835-LibrariesSave
And it won’t let you drill down at all!

So basically, you’re stuck with adding things to favorites. HTH :cheers:

BTW: In case your interested I used RegEdit to modify:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0CommonOpen FindPlacesUserDefinedPlaces
Adding a key called Place0
Then adding a String Value: Name
With the value set to: Libraries
Another String Value: Path
With the value set to: %UserProfile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsLibraries

Of course upon re-entering RegEdit the path had been converted to a long string of numbers.
