I have placed an MSAccess database on my FTP site.
Attempting to link a front-end database to it fails.
Within MSAccess, I have created a new FTP site, and can find the FTP database. When I select the file (in an attempt to link) an error message appears “This is not a legal file name”
Is this possible? I want several people to be able to share and update the data.
    Regards

FTP is the acronym for File Transfer Protocol. It is a method for uploading and downloading complete files. it doesn’t provide for linking a frontend database to a backend database.

You could connect to a backend database using terminal server software, but performance will probably be nail-bitingly slow.

A more common way of working with a remote database is to use a SQL Server or MySQL database on a server PC, with a web interface.

Thank you Hans. If I set up a VPN, would it be possible to have a shared back-end database with several users running MSAccess front-ends?

It should be possible in theory, but unless all users have a very dependable very high-speed internet connection, it will be painfully slow. And you should make very frequent backups, for Access is very sensitive to interruptions in the connection to the backend, so the risk of the database becoming corrupt is higher than on a LAN.

Thanks again Hans. I shall attempt to set up SQL Server. I have a developer copy and I saw some discussion in this forum. I really appreciate the help, it has saved me wasting a lot of time.
