Linked file and server access (2000 – SR-1)

We have a query which is linked to an excel spreadsheet, both the database and the excel spreadsheet live on the server. Of three people, only one is able to access the query. All three can access the database with no problem, but not the query that links to the excel file. The excel file is in a separate folder from the database. We receive the following message (‘F:beroutputsoutput.xls’ is not a valid path. Make sure the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides.) Path names, etc are spelled correctly and yes, they are connected to the server. All three pcs have this correct ‘drive’ mapped and as I said, they can access the Access database without problem. Could anyone give me a clue as to where/how to troubleshoot this further. TIA

Access is a multi-user application, but Excel isn’t. It seems that even if the workbook has been set up as shared, opening the workbook through Access is exclusive…

Would it be possible to import the Excel table into the Access database?

This has not bee the problem as only one person was trying to utilize the file at that given time. But, thanks for the thoughts and will definitely keep awares of this for future thought with this database.

Can the users who have a problem open the file directly using Excel? If not it’s likely a permissions problem on the file itself – is it on a NTFS drive? If they can, then it could be a permissions problem if you have setup User Security. Hopefully one of these will show results.
