Linking graphics (Excel 2002)

I have a project that uses large graphics, so far the workbook file size is over 6Mbytes. With the job less than a tenth done, I suspect it will become unwieldy!

In Word, when using Insert/Picture/From File the Insert dialogue box gives the option of Insert, Link to File, or Insert and Link. – “Link to File” does as it says and keeps the Word file size to sensible proportions if a large number of graphics are used.

When following the same set of menu options in Excel it is identical except that the Insert dialogue box does not have the “Link to file” option.

Have I missed something here? Suggestions on how to keep the Excel file size to sensible limits would be welcome.

Excel is primarily a tool for creating tables with calculations and charts. It doesn’t offer an option to insert a picture as a link. (I tried Insert | Object with the Create from file option, but that produced an empty rectangle). I fear that you’ll either have to live with the workbook becoming very large, or rethink whether Excel is the best application for this project. You can insert linked pictures, Excel tables and Excel charts in a Word document, for example.
