I created a Word document that links to a separate Powerpoint document. The document looks great and the links work just fine when I tested it. After the document was sent out to other users on our company’s network via email, they were unable to get the links to work properly after the files had been downloaded to their computers. I thought that using a relative path for the hyperlinks would work, but even that hasn’t been effective. Any suggestions about how to get these two linked documents to multiple users via email without confusing Word when it tries to find the referenced Powerpoint document?

There are a few things to try. First I would remove the obvious and check that the people are actually detaching both attachments into a folder before opening the Word file.

The easiest solution would be to try a different approach by putting both files onto the network in a public area and make sure all the links are working and then send a hyperlink to the Word file in the email you send out. Your email administrator will like this way.

If the PPT file is not huge, embed it into the Word doc so it can be opened with a double-click. Adding OLE objects can lead, ultimately, to instability and corruption in the document, so people shouldn’t Save As and re-use it for other projects.
