I was just wondering if there is a way to lock a FOLDER ( in Documents) in Windows 10 from people into it? Sort of like protecting it so one but me can look into it without a password. I seen a script somewhere before on how to do it, but I cannot remember how to do it. Thanks in advance.

Download VeraCrypt (free) and setup an encrypted folder.

Pardon the ignorance, but what’s the difference between using Windows’ built-in encryption for the Documents folder (right click on the folder, select Properties, then select the “Advanced…” button in the Attributes area then selecting the Encrypt contents check box) versus using a free program such as VeraCrypt?

It’s not available to us mere mortals not running Pro.

Assuming you have individual user accounts on the PC, you are the only one who uses your account and you are the only “administrator”, others will not be able to see your files because the default file permissions prevent others seeing anything in your user profile.

To share files in this scenario, you can place them in the Public folders.
      Open Explorer.
In the address bar at the top, type “public”.

      cheers, Paul

What method is best when preparing to send a laptop back for repairs? Is there a best-practices way that doesn’t involve deleting and overwriting all one’s personal files (in Documents, Pictures, etc.)? Couldn’t a technician simply delete a batch file as referred to above?

A tech can delete anything they want, but the basic rule of repair is “delete nothing”.
Unfortunately, sometimes a complete reinstall is the only option (dead disk etc), so you need to make sure you have a full backup before the PC is in need of repair.

If you don’t yet have a full backup, make one.
If you need help doing that, ask.

        cheers, Paul

I wouldn’t send a PC for repair with my personal files (documents, pictures, browsers URLs, cache..).

I would make a full backup and clean install OS (macOS, Linux, Windows..)
You can’t know who will browse and copy files, install shady apps…

You can use BBCodes to format your content.
Your account can't use all available BBCodes, they will be stripped before saving.
