AskWoody PlusJune 26, 2013 at 2:28 pm #1398569I had this problem on a big laptop that I only use occasionally. Apparently it started a long time before I knew it, so System Restore didn’t work. I Googled “can’t create new folder in Windows 7” and found the answer. It did take a bit of searching for the correct fix. It involved copying a Word Pad document to my desktop, then opening it to execute a registry command, or something like that. I don’t remember where the answer came from (most likely from a Microsoft forum) or how it works, but I carefully followed the instructions. It works now. Just remember, nobody ever has a problem that somebody else hasn’t encountered before (well, there has to be a first time but odds are it isn’t you).

AskWoody_MVPJune 16, 2013 at 6:00 pm #1397291Try the fix new folder zip (Post #3) which has worked for quite a few people in the same situation.

AskWoody LoungerJune 17, 2013 at 9:18 am #1397388I followed this thread and downloaded and ran fix_new_folder.zip. The New Folder option was back after rebooting. However, the option disappeared again within the work session. I repeated the steps and rebooted, and have the New Folder option again. My fingers are crossed that it will stay.

AskWoody LoungerJune 16, 2013 at 9:05 pm #1397331I would have said try a system file check first (post 2), and then if it was recent and sudden, system restore, and then tinker with the registry if those fail or are not available.
If it is a registry issue, stay away from registry cleaners or other third party “optimization” programs once corrected and some thorough full malware scans might be in order if the registry wasn’t massaged. If its just a context menu issue then its only a problem with the context menu most likely.WSwalkerpbus

AskWoody LoungerJune 29, 2013 at 11:21 pm #1399118Creating or renaming any folder produces “Could not find this item”, BUT clicking “Try Again” on pop-up box always works. This problem started a few weeks ago on my Gateway windows 7 laptop. I have recently gotten lastest updates from Microsoft. Also searched among other forums, and found this problem has been around for awhile, and have not found anyone who has definitely found the real solution.
I have run rkiller.exe and program called NewFolderFix.exe (which is a registration fix) and nothing works.
If anyone has some ideas for me I would appreciate it.
Btw, thanks for the post by rje49 above – it has me thinking, that recently in trying to solve windows 7 Wordpad problem (cannot change pemanantly, the default font and spacing settings), I created couple of default wordpad.rtf folders on my desktop as a workaround for that problem, and it worked. Wonder if that caused the New Folder problem?WSnightloves
AskWoody LoungerFebruary 25, 2014 at 9:13 am #14410131. Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter. Now go to following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryBackgroundshellexContextMenuHandlers
2. Now create a new key “New” under “ContextMenuHandlers” key.
3. Select “New” key and in right-side pane, set the value of Default to:
{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}
4. Close Registry Editor and you’ll get the missing “New” option back in context menu.
