After using Lotus 123 heavily for many years since it first came out I suddenly started getting error message when loading “…encountered problem and needs to close…[/b]“. I Have thoroughly scoured my computer, including registry cleaning, and find no faults. Usually I load from a shortcut on desktop. Strangely, once in a while (but very seldom) program does load, but most times I have to run from the program CD. Using version 9.8.208.1200 with Fix Pack 2, have adequate disc space on C and 1.256 GB of memory.

I uninstalled program from drive C and reinstalled (just the Lotus 123 portion), but for some unknown reason it does not ask where to install it and simply installs program on drive D. I’ve done this two times with same result.

I put a shortcut for the 123w.exe file on the Desktop, wherein the Properties show the correct location of 123.exe on he D drive but in the General page it shows the shortcut location in C:Documents and SettingsDesktop !!! Attempts to change the C to D for the drive letter fail.

Finding any help elsewhere for Lotus 123 is rare since MS Excel has pretty much taken over. I am reluctant to switch to Excel since my lotus sheets have macros indecipherable by Excel and at my advanced age will have a long relearning curve, I suspect. I am really hoping a Lounger will be able to come to my rescue !

Any help will be sincerely appreciated. If more information is needed please ask.

    Thank you.

      What OS?

I recently installed Smartsuite 9.??? (I’d need to look at the actual version but the CD is not here) on my Mother in Laws PC which is running on XP and it had no problems.

You could also try running the SETUP Program from the RUN Menu rather than the CD direct
I know that this has been used before to install on Vista and Windows 7

You could also try this forum if you have not already looked at it.

If you are using Windows XP

I suspect possible 1) compatibility mode issue or 2) Uninstall was not done completely.

Here is a site for a compatibility issue …..

Here is a site for complete uninstall …..

Here is some info about Smart Suite and Windows XP ….

Make sure you have backups of your data files and make a backup of your registry.

Thanks for the quick advice. I will follow up on all suggestions.
As for uninstalling, I simply used Control Panel and uninstalled the Lotus Smartsweet listing from there. It seemed to go well, but will see what your refences say.
      Thanks.

Many thanks to AKW and Tim Sullivan for the prompt advice which hit the nail on the head.

Deselecting the 2000 Compatibility option did the trick. At least it has cured my problem for now and I hope it stays that way. Strange that I have been using this version for years (initially with Win 2000) and for 3 years with Win XP. The problem started just 1-2 months ago. Maybe an XP Fix update changed something.

The reference to the Lotus Forum was a shocker. Many times I searched for such a forum without success, Indeed, when I talked to IBM customer DIS-service they could give no technical advice without a $180 yearly Service Policy, including any reference to a forum when I asked if there was one ! I checked it out, and although it seems slim on the 123 spreadsheet program information it may some day come in handy.

I also looked at the other links listed and will be more thorough if I again have to uninstall the Lotus programs.

This was my first inquiry on the Lounge and I’m really impressed. Thanks again.
