In Word 2010 (I know, I was a dinosaur) I had a mail merge document with the read-only property set. This meant that I could scroll through records but obviously couldn’t save it.

So I could “use” the document and not accidentally make changes to it.

Having moved to Word 365 I find that if the read-only property is set a message comes up when it is opened “You can only view this document. You do not have permission to edit it.”

Actually I can do nothing with the mail merge document at all other than look at the record at which it opens – I cannot scroll through the other records, for instance to print one of them.

This seems perverse and a new more restrictive interpretation of “read-only” as I cannot now read most of it !

Is anyone aware of a workaround ?

    Thanks

I have found out the this will be fixed (reverted to the previous behaviour) in Microsoft Word Version 2303 (Build 16227.20280).

Hopefully this will roll out soon in Updates, but I don’t have a date.
