Windows Update had a problem with my Windows 11 Pro computer. KB5018418 could not install and gave an error code.

I had to ask the question: “How can I fix error 0x80073701 and install KB5018418?”

Tekkie Boy, a Windows expert with the Windows Community, guided me through a perfect repair sequence:
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-can-i-fix-error-0x80073701-and-install/69d9c1c0-9a1e-4032-b375-0a373698f8d4

As conclusion Tekkie Boy advised me to always temporarily disable Malwarebytes before running Windows Update.

As temporarily disabling Malwarebytes is trivial, I shall henceforth heed that advice meticulously. Also for my Windows 10 laptop. If there’s no need or it doesn’t help, it certainly can’t hurt.

I always pause my A/V (Kaspersky) before installing Windows updates as the A/V use extensively the CPU checking each byte written/read.
There is no way to exclude Microsoft’s processes.

      Hi E Pericoloso Sporgersi:

This problem has been reported by several Win 11 users in the Malwarebytes forum but employee AdvancedSetup’s 21-Aug-2022 post in AgentZer0’s Win 11 Cumulative Update KB5016629 Failing to Install Due to Malwarebytes suggests that Malwarebytes isn’t planning to do anything about it because they believe it is something that Microsoft needs to fix on their end.

The latest topic on this problem was davei1’s 11-Oct-2022 Malwarebytes Interfering with Windows Update KB5018427 on Windows 11 22H2 but it was quickly marked as “Resolved” and locked from further comment because davei1 noted they could get their Windows cumulative update to install if they temporarily disabled their Malwarebytes service.

I’ve never seen this problem on my Windows 10 laptop, but instead of temporarily disabling your Malwarebytes service, you can also disable the Malwarebytes Premium setting at Settings | Security | Launch Malwarebytes in Background When Windows Starts Up and re-boot to ensure your Malwarebytes service doesn’t start at boot up. After your Windows Updates have been installed then re-enable that setting.

That’s exactly what I meant with “temporarily disabling Malwarebytes“.

For good measure you might in Malwarebytes’ settings also uncheck “Enable self-protection module early start”.
