I installed 2020-05 .NET Framework 4.5.2 patch KB 4556399. But while Update History shows status “successful”, Installed Updates lists KB 4552920 instead. If I’m not mistaken, both are 2020-05 .NET Framework Rollups.

We updated a Dell Latitude E5530 running Windows 7 SP1. The installation seemed to go smoothly. I installed the Win 10 Rollup together with the Malicious Software Removal Tool, then the .NET Framework Rollup, and lastly the Servicing Stack Update.

Did I do something wrong? What happened and what should I do now?

The .NET Rollup is actually a bundle of updates, each for a different version of .NET. Depending on what version(s) of .NET you have installed, you will get the appropriate patches for the version(s). That is what shows up in Installed updates.

If you look at the support page for KB4556399, you will see which patch is for which version of .NET. KB 4552920 is for .NET v4.5.2

      WU shows, unchecked again:

      2020-05 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, 4.7.2, 4.8 for Windows 7 for x64 (KB4556399)

Never going to install an unchecked-box patch. Wonder if Claire-m above’s 399 was unchecked…

Plain to see there’s something fishy here.

Um, forgot to mention in the above that no monthly security rollup appears in WU.

      Just good old 399.

      What’s going on??

OK, but that still doesn’t explain why WU isn’t showing the monthly Rollup, nor why that 399 box is still unchecked. I have all the SSU’s required, so what gives?

Do you have the May SSU KB4555449 installed? It’s a prereq for the June patches.

AAMOF, much to my surprise, I don’t! Everything was green in WU last month, as I ran WU several times, and it gave a green shield, “All OK” the last time around. Should have been offered through WU:

“This update is available through Windows Update. It will be downloaded and installed automatically.”

          https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4555449/servicing-stack-update-for-windows-7-sp1-and-server-2008-r2-sp1

Yeah, right, automatically my foot. Thanks, PK, I’ll get it from the catalog, install it, try WU again and report back.

OK, NOW the rollup shows, but ol’ 399 remains unchecked. Oh, Man! 1/2 problem solved is good, tho.

(It’s not only “Cigareets, Whiskey, and Wild, Wild Women,” that’ll drive you crazy and insane! Windows Patching is doing a superior job!)

      Wonder what’s wrong with 399?

        It’s unchecked for a reason.

      Claire,

Was the 399 patch checked or unchecked in WU? There’s something odd about it, and I’d really like to know if you remember. Thanks!

Amen to that, brother! Something in rotten in the state of El Patchia on this one. I may ping Susan to look at this thread, if she already hasn’t.

…and I now have ALL the WIN 7 ESU patches you list in https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/june-2020-patch-tuesday-rolls-out/#post-2270882, and 399’s STILL unchecked.

(I’m still simmering about “This update is available through Windows Update. It will be downloaded and installed automatically.” Uh-huh. Right.)

Thanks again, it’s people like you who keep all of us out of hot water! 🙂

I don’t recall if 399 was unchecked. But it was offered as an Important Update together with the 2020-05 Win 7 Rollup and the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

FYI, there are TWO 2020-05 .NET Framework 4.5.2 Rollups for Windows 7 listed at the following Microsoft URL:

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/894199/software-update-services-and-windows-server-update-services-2020

      2020-05 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, 4.7.2, 4.8 for Windows Embedded Standard 7, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB4556399)

2020-05 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 4.5.2 for Windows Embedded Standard 7, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 (KB4552920)

My system’s Update History shows KB4556399 with Status “successful”.

But Installed Updates lists KB 4552920 instead.

      • #2271631

KB4556399 is the Rollup, a bundle of patches for all the versions of .NET listed. see the MS Support page for the Rollup – scroll down for a list of the individual patches.

KB4552920 is the patch for .NET 4.5.2, the version you have installed on your computer.

You only see the individual patch(s) installed for the version(s) you have installed on your machine.

    • #2271641

So the apparent discrepancy in this instance between the Update History and the Installed Updates isn’t a discrepancy at all? Update History showing 399’s Status as “successful” means (in this instance) that the appropriate patch for my system (KB4552920) has been installed. Is that correct?

Thank you!!                                                                                                                                                      Thanks to you and Woody and the others, I am learning at least the basic stuff I need to know to keep my machines running more or less smoothly.
