KB5001716 Update for Windows Update Service components. Another Windows nag coming to your Win10 screen soon. Wait for it….

      Notes about this update

      • When this update is installed, Windows may attempt to download and install feature updates to your device if it is approaching or has reached the end of support for your currently installed Windows version. Feature updates offer new functionality and help keep your device secure.
      • After this update is installed, Windows may periodically display a notification informing you of problems that may prevent Windows Update from keeping your device up-to-date and protected against current threats. For example, you may see a notification informing you that your device is currently running a version of Windows that has reached the end of its support lifecycle, or that your device does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for the currently installed version of Windows.

      Windows Update

This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update. It is also offered directly to Windows Update Client for some devices that have not installed the most recent updates

I hid KB5001716 last year when it showed up in wushowhide after I dropped most of the GPEdit settings spelled out for Windows 10 Pro in AKB2000016 for the Windows Update for Business area back to the “Not configured” state. Once I did that, it showed up and I promptly hid it.

I just ran wushowhide, and KB5001716 was nowhere to be found in the offerings for this month.

Just for clarity’s sake, the settings I returned to “Not configured” to get KB5001716 to show up are all of those under the WUfB folder except “Manage preview builds” and “Disable safeguards for Feature Updates”. Both of those have been set to “Not configured” for a long time. “Manage preview builds” has gone through a change or two since its implementation in the days around Windows 10 2004’s release, which is why I currently have it set to “Not configured”.

EDIT: Out of an abundance of caution w/respect to to MS’s somewhat devious ways, after hiding this month’s updates with wushowhide, I returned the Quality Updates setting to 30 days from 0 (zero) days. That way, if it does show up when I change the Quality Updates setting back to zero to install this month’s updates, I’ll be able to hide it again.

I mentioned this because it was listed today in the Description of Software Update Services changes in content KB894199.

          New nonsecurity content:

          • 2024-05 Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2, Windows 10 Version 21H2, Windows 10 Version 21H1, and Windows 10 Version 20H2 (KB5001716)

Yeah, when I went to the KB article, I looked for a revision date on the article but didn’t find one. So, I looked at the file properties table in the article and, sure enough, the file dates for the update were both April 27th of this year, so that’s how I knew it had been revised. Knowing it had been revised, my spidey sense kicked in and told me to ratchet up the Quality Updates setting back to 30 days from zero days.

Come to think of it, after reading what you quoted above from the bulletin that describes KB5001716, this KB sounds a lot like an old acquaintance of ours, KB4023057! I hid that one back in October of last year and haven’t “seen” it since! I do remember that it would periodically resurface every so often and we’d have to hide it all over again.

I wonder if KB5001716 is just the latest iteration of KB4023057??

            • #2671555

              Perhaps you remember KB2952664?

              Hi Bob99:

I haven’t installed my May 2024 Patch Tuesday updates yet, but to the best of my knowledge Windows Update has never offered earlier versions of KB5001716 to my Win 10 Pro machine. See my 08-Mar-2024 post # 2646609 in Alex572’s March 2024 topic KB5001716: Update for Windows Update Service Components about how this patch is typically pushed out to Win 10 machines with older versions of Win 10 that are reaching end of service.

The chart <here> on the Windows 10 dashboard shows that Enterprise and Education editions of Win 10 v21H2 are reaching end of service on 11-Jun-2024, so perhaps that’s why an updated KB5001716 was released this month.

I typically wait it out a week or more on any updates from any platform. I let others be the beta testers instead of myself. I do not trust Apple anymore then I trust Microsoft to properly test updates before releasing to the public.

It appears ios 17.5 might have a concerning bug

      Not on my iPhone.

It could be an Amazon, Google servers that host iCloud, bug.

      • #2671853

In the commentary below the actual article at the following link from MacRumors, several folks are claiming that their old photos have kept reappearing even after having been re-deleted after having installed 17.5.

        https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/troubling-ios-17-5-bug-reportedly-resurfacing-old-deleted-photos.2426394/

        • #2671858

Just deleted a couple of photos on my iPhone. None has reappeared.

          • #2671862

Good to hear that things are working for you on your phone, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for others, apparently.

Let’s see just what comes from Apple in the next while to see if they even acknowledge it or not. So far, mum’s been the word when they’ve been prodded by the industry media outlets.

One plausible explanation is that perhaps those who are experiencing the revival of their old, long-since-deleted photos have a certain setting (or couple of settings, perhaps) on their phones that, after having successfully installed 17.5, is (are)are bringing about this behavior.

          • #2671863

Just deleted a couple of photos on my iPhone. None has reappeared.

The reports are that long-ago-deleted photos are reappearing, not freshly-deleted photos.

        • #2671884

I recently updated my 13 pro to 17.5. I did have several photos that I had deleted several years ago reappear in Photos. I don’t use iCloud storage or any other online storage for any of my data or photos so no online source to reload from. The photos that reappear are selective and represent only a very small fraction of the photos that I have deleted. Upon investigation I discovered that all photos that reappeared were photos that I had texted someone and the “deleted” photo from the Photos app was still present in the copy of that old still saved text message. It appears that on my iPhone the Photos app displays all photos on the phone and a deleted photo in the Photos app that still exists in another app will “reappear”.

        • #2674551

Not quite what you asked for but the lock screen widgets can be turned off under

          Settings>Personalization>Lock Screen

There’s a drop down menu and the top selection is None. After reboot I had weather, sports scores, etc. on as a default but after changing the setting to none and a reboot, things were back the way I wanted them to be.

This update fried one of our  customers Dell Optiplex 7080.

      2024-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5037771)

Ended up with black screen, After 4 hours of work trying every trick we could think of we ended up having to use blockapatch to hide this update otherwise we got stuck in a loop where it kept trying to install the patch, fail and cause black screen that we need to repair each time.

Hoping it is just an anomaly.

Outlook from Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com are not the same. The settings in one do not apply to the settings in the other.

FROM not showing as an Option. The FROM filed in Outlook is to select which email account (AKA which email address) to use when there is more than one email account in Outlook to be sent from. How many email accounts do you have in Outlook? If you have only one email account or if Outlook only shows one email account Outlook doesn’t present an unneeded option. If you had more than one email account, check and see if those accounts are still in Outlook.

Thanks for the info on differences between the 2 Outlooks.   I have 3 email alias id’s on my Microsoft account. There is an old one I want to delete soon.  The other 2 I will keep.  I logged onto my account and see all 3 alias id’s in there.  I do see the “From” email at the top of the email so I guess that is the only one I can use from my Mac.

Found this online, which explains how it works for Mac. I may try the fix suggested for adding the alias email account…..https://superuser.com/questions/1562227/outlook-365-for-mac-missing-from-field

Glad to see the From field is there.  About to show you another way to make the From field show, but that is not necessary now.

Things may be different on a Mac (which I do not use), but is there a dropdown arrow to the right of the From text such as From ˅ ?  Clicking the ˅ should display the other email address accounts to select.

This is how to add the From field (which allows you to use another email address sent from this account) for Outlook in Windows and not sure if it is the same in a Mac. This is usually done when there is only one account in Outlook and the From field doesn’t appear at all.

      Open Outlook
      Open a New Email window.
At the top left corner of the New Email window is the Quick Access Toolbar. Click the dropdown arrow to the right of the toolbar and select More Commands.
This opens the Options for New Email (different from the Options in the main Outlook window) to the Quick Access Toolbar page.
In the left panel of that page under Choose commands from: click the dropdown arrow and select All Commands. The box below will display all commands in alphabetical order (numbers first). Scroll down the list and select From.
With From highlighted click the add button between the boxes to add that command to the the Quick Access Toolbar.
Click OK to save your changes and close the Options window.
The new command icon is added to the Quick Access Toolbar.

Like I said, I’m not sure how this command will work on your Mac. If the icon is greyed out then it will not work and will not add the From field.

Strange that Outlook on your iPad works like Outlook in Windows and your Outlook on your Mac doesn’t.

      Hi Susan:

Windows Update successfully installed all updates offered for the May 2024 Patch Tuesday on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 laptop, including:

      • KB5037768: 2024-05 Cumulative Update for Win 10 Version 22H2 for x64 (OS Build 19045.4412)
      • KB5038285: 2024-05 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 222H2 for x64

      • KB890830 : Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 – v5.124

My system has been running well since the updates were installed (e.g., DISM, SFC and Windows Update Troubleshooter do not detect any problems), but Windows Update did initially throw two 0x800706be download errors for my KB5037768 monthly CU and KB2267602 Microsoft Defender virus definition set v1.411.217.0 – see image below). Clicking the Re-try link for the CU triggered a fresh update check and the update process ran to completion as expected (including the early “Restart Now” pop-up I always see as soon as any .NET Framework update has finished installing – see attached image) and I suspect I just had a temporary problem with the connection to my ISP.

      May-2024-PT-Two-0x800706be-Download-Errors-No-Progress-EDITED-18-May-2024

There were lots of “firsts” for me this May 2024 Patch Tuesday. For example, this was the first Patch Tuesday since Microsoft introduced a “new and improved” method for delivery of the Win 10 v22H2 cumulative updates (see the MS 24-Apr-2024 article <here>), the first Patch Tuesday since my Malwarebytes Premium upgraded from v4.x to v5.x, and the first Windows Update since my MS Defender platform updated to v4.18.24040.4 on 17-May-2024. As I said, I’m hoping it was just a glitchy internet connection that caused the 0x800706be download errors, so I’ll just have to wait and see how next month’s Patch Tuesday updates behave.

I was not offered the KB5001716 (Update for Windows Update Service Components) PKCano mentioned in post # 2671512, and so far:

      • I have not seen the full screen “New Journey with Windows 11” notification (i.e., the Windows 10 End of Support reminder nagging me to upgrade – see the ghacks.net 12-Apr-2024 article <here>). FYI, my laptop is eligible for the upgrade to Win 11 but I am using the Target Release Version setting in my Local Group Policy Editor to stay on Win 10 Pro / Version 22H2.
      • There are no widgets on my Lock Screen and my widget settings at Settings | Personalization | Lock Screen haven’t changed since last month (see the 2nd image in my 12-Apr-2024 post # 2659058). Also, a new setting to add Windows Spotlight support for desktop backgrounds at Settings | Personalization | Background | Personalize Your Background | Windows Spotlight that is gradually rolling out to Win 10 computers still hasn’t been delivered to my system (see the ghacks.com 15-Mar-2024 article <here> about both Win 10 settings changes).
      • There is still no Copilot in Windows icon displayed on the far-right of my taskbar in the system tray, and no new settings at Settings | Personalization | Taskbar to display / hide this icon (see the Neowin’s original 20-Nov-2023 article <here> and 22-Mar-2024 status update <here> about the gradual rollout).

Win 10 pro. Neither have I been offered Kb5001716 using winshowhide. And I still have hidden kb 3004441, as my recovery partition is too small.  Considering Susan’s “tweaks” won’t be posted until Monday, and many of us have to work next week, I was going to try and “update” tomorrow, so I can then deal with Apple updates as well on what’s become a Sunday “tech day”. Anyone seeing any untoward adverse effects on Win 10 to date other than what has been posted?

      Win 10 Pro 22H2

      KB5037768 CU
      KB5038285  Net framework 3.5,4.8, 4.81

Downloads faster than usual; Net framework instant, but install of CU hung for 5 min. each at 20%/44%/74%.
      SFC/ scannow & dism clean.
Now at o/s build 19045.4412 Feature Exp Pack 1000.19056.1000.0

New – separate “Optional Features” (list avail via Admin account only) & “System Components” sections, both under “Settings>System”
New – Under Admin, able to “uninstall” more apps ie. Phone App via Settings>App&Features or “add or remove programs”.

*Note: App still shows up in both local accounts under New ‘System Components” section, with no way to uninstall.

Is this new? I haven’t installed the Patch Tuesday May patches yet, but have the April ones. I have separate “System Components” and “Optional Features” already.

          Hi Deo / WCHS:

It’s probably not a coincidence that most of the apps listed at Settings | System | System Components on my Win 10 machine are also now labeled “System” on my Start menu. See the 28-Oct-2023 Neowin article Windows 10 gets a surprising Start menu update.

          Win-10-Pro-v22H2-Start-Menu-System-Labels-27-May-2024

I think this has something to do with Microsoft’s rush to meet requirements for the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The Windows blog Previewing changes in Windows to comply with the Digital Markets Act in the European Economic Area (updated 29-Feb-2024) states in part:

          Windows operating system and apps

Customers using Windows have always used a combination of operating system functionality as well as apps, but now Windows will clearly identify operating system functionality in places like Settings, Start, and Search:

          • Settings > System > System Components will show notable operating system components.
          • Start menu’s All Apps list has been renamed to All and operating system components are labeled with “system”.
          • Under Search, search results will show operating system components labeled with “system”.

@WCHS I usually comb through every single PC setting after each monthly updates, as System settings changes often occur. I must have missed these last month as I was offline most of the month after April updates, and nothing on AW referenced the changes:) Thx for letting me know these occurred in April!

Hi @Deo, I don’t know that April is when the separation started occurring b/c I’ve never looked for this before your post. All I know is that I’ve have the April updates now and no May updates yet and I have the separation.

I looked at March post updates and the settings seperation settings weren’t there then.

I find it odd that windows states “if you would like to uninstall…” lol

          Thank you Imacri post 2675629…
I noticed “system” underneath a few start menu options, but they were not yet in the new “System Components section” at that time. Funnily enough, I was able to “uninstall” a heap from an unused test local Admin account via Apps>Features prior to installing March just in the nick of time – they didn’t come back! Whew, was lucky, under the wire uninstalling from one account anyways:)

            Hi Deo:

In addition to the “notable” operating system components now listed on my Win 10 machine at Settings | System | System Components I also have about a dozen optional components (Internet Explorer 11, Wordpad, etc.) listed at Settings | System | Optional that all have a Remove button.

            Win-10-Pro-v22H2-Settings-System-Optional-Features-Removable-03-Jun-2024

None of these optional Windows components are listed at Settings | Apps | Apps & Features with my UWP (Universal Windows Platform / Microsoft Store) apps, and according to Previewing Changes in Windows to Comply with the Digital Markets Act in the European Economic Area Microsoft have also added an Uninstall button to a few more UWP apps at Settings | Apps | Apps & Features (e.g., Camera, Cortana, Photos, etc.).

Hi @Deo, are you wanting to uninstall the Phone Link app? If so, see Ghacks: How to uninstall phone link for using a PowerShell command to do it.

The Ghacks article is dated April 2022, but more recent web sources (e.g., one dated March 2024) say the same thing.
