And this is why we don’t install preview updates.

But I, Hardened Windows user, do.  My NAS (Intel DH87RL Motherboard (circa 2013), Core i5 4670 CPU @4.3GHz 4 core/4 thread (circa 2013) got the KB5029351 push 8-22-2023 with nary a hiccup.  My desktop (ASUS Prime Z690M-Plus D4 LGA 1700 µATX Motherboard, Intel Core i5-12600K CPU 10 (6P+4E) @3.7GHz) got the push the next day with nary a hiccup.

        Both machines have this setting:

        Preview-Updates

IF I were to have issues, I’m less than six minutes away from not having issues by restoring my most current drive image.  I stay fully updated and have yet to have an issue with any of my Windows installations.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

There are allways alternatives and some other platforms offer nearly the same functionality in compare to Windows (well obviously not with gaming, on windows you can run vast majority of games).

TBH, not seeking for updates anymore. Not using Windows anymore for personal purposes (at home).

Interestingly it seems like OEMs are affected, including those using Intel design. But if people will put enough feedback, Im pretty sure they will fix it swiftly.

One of the reports @ MDL:

So the latest update “August 22, 2023—KB5029351 (OS Build 22621.2215) Preview” made my PC BSOD at bootup with a “UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR” error code. It auto rolled back the update after a few reboots. It’s quite insane that they mess with supported cpus still and allow the update to install on what they think is unsupported causing such problems.

Specs: Intel Core i9-13900K on a MSI PRO Z690-A DDR4 with newest BIOS (7D25v1D)

        Nice hardware!

        Desktop Asus TUF X299 Mark 1, CPU: Intel Core i7-7820X Skylake-X 8-Core 3.6 GHz, RAM: 32GB, GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. Display: Four 27" 1080p screens 2 over 2 quad.

So these are the preview updates, they will not install if I run the updater in Win 10 unless I click them at the bottom of the update list right?

      • #2583222

Yes, they should not install automatically.

Thank you. So avoid the “optional” uptdates for this month! I have never been a fan of how MS calls them “optional” when they are beta updates…

Further digging seems to indicate its affecting people on MSI motherboards with the latest bios update and gen 13 Intel cpus.

One user here claims the update has now been pulled by MS: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/15ybvgn/august_22_2023kb5029351_os_build_226212215_preview/

      My devices like monthly previews…
when they are blocked via GP settings 🙂

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

“Microsoft now appears to have pulled the KB5029351 update from affected systems, but it’s still available for everyone else. The update went through Microsoft’s usual Windows Insider testing, into the Release Preview ring, and then to retail copies of Windows 11 before issues were reported.”

So it seems the optional update is pulled and they are aware of it.

“it seems that MSI motherboards, mainly from Intel’s 600 series (Z690) and 700 series (Z790), are the ones where the issue is infesting the most,..

so far I don’t see any modern MSI boards with AMD processors (and AMD based chipsets) that are affected with the problem

The KB article still list no known issues

the unsupported_processor error was eventually added onto the known issues section for KB articles 5029331 & 5029351.

and Microstar International (MSI) the motherboard maker has recently released a statement regarding the unsupported_processor error and has advised users with boards containing Intel 600 or 700 chipsets to “refrain” from installing the Win11 KB5029351 update

      MSI : Temporary Workaround

If you have already encountered this issue, KB5029351 might automatically be uninstalled to allow Windows to restore to normal. However, if KB5029351 is not automatically uninstalled, we recommend reverting your BIOS to the previous version and uninstalling KB5029351 from Windows.

If you are unsure of how to restore to older BIOS, this video link will help you on how to flash BIOS on MSI motherboards.

After investigating these reports, we have found that the “UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR” error was not caused by issues in KB5029332 and is limited to a specific subset of processors. We are collaborating with device manufacturers (OEMs) and will temporarily mitigate this issue by not offering KB5029332 to Windows devices that might be affected by this issue. If you still experience this issue, please contact your device’s processor manufacturer.

I agree about not installing optional MS updates but what about proprietary vendor updates that are sometimes included in “Optional Updates”? Are there any reasons not to install them?

      • #2584063

It’s a “it depends”.  What are you being offered?  Generally speaking if they are drivers I do not recommend them.

        • #2584100

I was referring to computer manufacturer and/or OEM hardware updates, usually drivers but not exclusively (for example IBM processor code updates).  I don’t recall having an issue that I could directly connect with one of these updates, but I consider you an authority.  Could you expand on why you do not recommend installing vendor’s driver updates?

          • #2584105

Past history where a driver offered by Microsoft caused issues. I now use it as guidance that I should look for a vendor driver.

      Which proprietary updates ?

You don’t install ‘optional updates’ unless the update fixing some very serious problem on your system.

Updated BIOS fixes Error Message “UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR” caused BSOD on MSI’s Intel 700 and 600 Series Motherboards

Regarding some of our users receiving an error message of “UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR” upon Blue Screen of Death with MSI’s Intel 700 and 600 Series Motherboards. MSI and Intel have been working hard these several weeks to come up with a solution together and have found the root cause of the BSOD issue which is regarding the firmware setting of Intel Hybrid Architecture. It is determined that the BSOD will only affecting Intel’s 13th Gen Core i9 paired with the following versions of the Windows operating system (OS)….

The new BIOS coming will include an update on the Intel CPU uCode which will prevent any more messages regarding the “UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR” issues. This upcoming update will correspond to both 13th-generation and newer ones. There will be more BIOS available to download on MSI’s official website for all Intel 700 and 600 Series models this week and all BIOS release will be available by the end of September…..
