I was quite surprised earlier this week when I tried to download KB3192391 using Pale Moon in Firefox compatibility mode. I was expecting the usual “please use IE to access the catalog…” message. Instead, I was presented with the proper page and download links – “it works” I exclamed!

At least MS got this part right.

A caveat.

Make sure your search term is specific enough to return less than 1000 results or some items may not be included.

I’ll probably search by “October, 2016 Windows 7 x64”.

I just gave the above link a try. Looks good to me. I’ll see what comes of it when the Defcon number changes to see how the download works.

There are 2 copies of the Win 7 x64 patches. One is labeled “Windows 7”, the other is labeled
“Windows Embedded Standard 7”. They are both 119.4 Mbytes. What’s the distinction – which should I download?

Windows 7 is what you want. Windows Embedded is a completely different operating system – there’s absolutely n o chance that you’re running it.

I thought that after 30 years using Windows that I would know what to do with updates to my Win7 x64 system but all the conversations don’t help.
I’m waiting until Woody goes to Defcon 3 until I download ANYTHING!!!!!!

Nothing, both provide the same exact file, because both shares the same components
but msft is obligated to distinguish the updates per product
very few updates that are separate between Client and Embedded editions

Just to be clear…through Windows Update, we will only be offered “Security Quality Monthly Rollup” and to get the “Security Only Quality Update” it has to be obtained through the MUCatalogue (which MS has just made available with all browsers)?

Do I have that right?

I just installed a fresh copy of windows 7 sp1 after formatting my hard drive from windows 10 pro x64

The problem is, I have no updates, when I try to update it won’t let me, and I have tried to download and install this -> Windows 6.1-KB3020369-x64 and downloaded the sp2 rollup thing.

I have not been able to install even 1 update. No matter what I do, I simply cannot update anything. I am wondering if there is something I need to do?

I am also running the spybot – active beacon which shuts off the telemetry and other snooping crap.

I’ve also noticed that my ability to copy and paste stuff is seriously impaired both in notepad and else where, but when I check for corruption in the registry it shows nothing.

I am going to try and use the fix it tool to see what updates I can get. Is there a current list of kb to avoid?

Searched “October windows 7 x64”, received results…
“October, 2016 Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems KB3192391”
or
“October, 2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems KB3185330”

Why don’t they just go for it. I mean if your going to confuse, obfuscate, or otherwise make a mess of it, really go for it.
I suggest, “October, 2016 Security Monthly cumulative Only Quality Meta Recommended Combined All-in-One important Performance Enhanced improvements Update Reliability Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems”.

There, now we’ve included every term MS has used to describe updates. Makes more sense to me.

It is still in preview, not announced officially and this is likely the reason why http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com behaves differently than http://catalog.update.microsoft.com
If you use https instead of http for the new site, you will get a warning that the certificate is issued for a different site.
It is still work in progress and you are better off by keeping your old good IE11 handy until this piece of work is finalised and the updated site is officially released.

There are many, many patch blocklists. The latest submissions are here:

I hope to put together an article soon for InfoWorld that’ll address this exact issue. The “SP2” rollup is problematic. Your best bet is to just go ahead and install the patches you want to install. Of course, if you can’t get any patches to appear, that’s not much help, eh?

A bit off topic.

Yesterday I installed KB3172605 to get back to a quick check for updates scan. It worked very nicely (KB3020369 prerequisite had been previously installed) and the check took mere seconds.

That said, when I booted up this morning, the boot process seemed a little strange. So, after doing a couple of things I ran CCleaner and found a listing in the Windows Error Reporting column; App crash for devmonsrv, mediasrv and obexsrv. After Googling, I discovered that they are Intel Bluetooth related.

I thought that the 3172605 Bluetooth problem had been fixed? Did MS release a patch for the patch that I’m not aware of?

KB3172605 or MS did not solve the Intel Bluetooth issue
you have to get new driver or software from Intel, it’s available for some types i think, not all

Interestingly enough, I clicked on the catalog link just for S&Gs, and a little box came up asking if I want to install said catalog on my computer.

Should I install it on my computer?

Also, I do use both IE11 and Firefox.

You must’ve used IE to get to the site – and it probably asked if it could install the Catalog ActiveX control (???).

If that’s the case, I’d say no – ActiveX deserves to die – and just use Firefox.

Thanks for the responses.

I don’t actually use Bluetooth on my W7 SP1 machine, but I don’t necessarily appreciate MS causing the Bluetooth components to crash after every boot up. I’ll keep checking with CCleaner and let you know if the Win Error Reporting status for those BT components should change.

If you are lucky, the Intel new driver will work for you. I think that there is a specific sequence to install. You need to uninstall KB3172605 and install the Intel driver first after which KB3172605 can be installed again. You may also consider avoiding KB3172605 if the Intel driver will not fix the issue. Unfortunately, according to what we know, Microsoft will not fix the issue which Intel apparently assumed to resolve.

It is about the “speedup” which is not installed.
@aron Please do not install the “Service Pack 2” as it has known issues and install only KB3020369 and KB3172605.
From there your installation will proceed normally from WU. Just do not install more than 25-50 updates at a time to avoid running out of memory. Start with Important non-security first and Security next and everything else less KB2952664 and KB3021917 last.

I don’t recall if it specifically said ActiveX control. Yes I did use IE11 to get there. I will give it a crack with Firefox. I do use FF as there are websites (like Tumblr) that don’t take to IE11.

Just a quick question.
I went to the MU catalog and lookup the KB890830 M.S.R.T. and when downloaded the prompt box comes up with two downloads??
How do I find out which one of them to download for my 7X64 Laptop.None of The updates that are in my Win. Update file will not download or install. I’ve tried it. It ran all night it just said 0% Of 0%

Thanks for your response on the download question.

I should have mentioned that the reason I went to the Microsoft download catalog web site was that I’ve been unable to download some patches directly from Windows Update this month. Specifically, Windows Update listed four patches for me:
1-NET Framework
2-Security Quality Monthly Update (The big one 119+ KB)
3-Malicious Software Removal Tool
4-Definition Update for Windows Defender

I first checked off the NET Framework patch and it downloaded and installed quickly. Then I checked off the 2 small patches, #s 3 and 4. They won’t download. The “Downloading Updates Windows” shows “Downloading 2 updates and 0 KB total 0% complete”. I’ve tried it with each patch individually # 2,3, and 4 with the same result. I’ve walked away and left the computer for a time, always with the same result. Any
ideas? This isn’t the slow scan problem, is it?

Woody, since you say to wait, I’ll hold off on downloading the Security Quality Rollup from the catalog for a while.

In response to your question about the updating. If I launched the WU it would spend hours looking for non existent updates. I did give up on that route, I read on here somewhere that someone had tried those 2 patches I originally listed and he had no problems.

I tried the fix it tool, and that did nothing it got stuck on trying to fix updates for over an hour before I pulled the plug on that avenue.

I tried to install the first patch, and it just sat there checking to see what updates I had, which was something from 2011 which came already installed, and of course sp1.

I decided since the install was recently fresh, I had nothing to loose in reinstalling the 7. I used a different USB port, it installed in around 5 minutes. The first thing I did, was come here and check if someone had answered me. I was this time able to install the first patch with no problem. So I put it down to a faulty old usb 2.0 socket somehow that had done something to my original install.

I presume there is no block kb list present yet? Seems people posting just about any kb number whether it is good or not it seems.

I now have a long list 159 security updates
and a longish lists of NON critical updates, where I noticed from another post the dreaded snooping kb is list in my non critical updates. This has becoming impossibily confusing .

Get the file that don’t have “delta” in the name
delta file is used by WU to patch the previous month file (if exist) to generate the new file, instead downloading whole new file
