Naming a web (FP2003 XP)

When first creating a new web using FP, is it necessary to name the new web the same name as the domain name to which it will be published, or is that FP web name just the way to identify that particular web on my computer? If that name is just for my own way of identifying a web in FP, then when creating that web name, can I leave spaces between words or is it better to connect words with an underline or dash?

I know this is a primitive question, but one that for whatever reason confuses me.

I have honestly never created a web from FrontPage. I have created webs from within an IIS server though. Inside IIS, a website ‘name’ is just a ‘label’ of the site. For instance, our company’s website is currently ‘InternetSite’ on the IIS server, but there are old ‘versions’ on the IIS server (‘OldSite’,’WebSite’,etc.) which are just turned off. On a side note, an IIS server can have several running websites, that can be differentiated by either port or IP Address.

As to your question about spaces, It’ll probably allow you to use spaces, which many things do, but here’s a question for you, if you question the use of them, why not just assume the worst, and not use them. Make sense?

Thanks for the response. Since I only use Front Page for creating webs, Mark’s answer was actually what I was looking for. I’m lost when going outside Front Page

LOL, no problem. I hang around this forum because I do use FP, but ironically, I rarely use any actual FP features other then the navigation structure it provides. I write almost all of my HTML and ASP in Microsoft Scripting Editor (a component of FP). And when I am ‘building’ a new site, I usually set it up myself, on an IIS server. So I am chalk full of knowledge on a lot of the ‘inner workings’ of FP, but when it comes to some of FP’s run of the mill functions, I’m just inexperienced I guess.

In Frontpage you can name the web whatever you like. You can use any name allowed by Windows, so yes, spaces are fine. When you upload the web to your website, it will ask you for the destination and will only transfer the data within the web.

For the record, the web is simply a folder on your computer’s hard drive. Many’s the time I have manipulated the contents of a website outside of Frontpage and then used Frontpage for something else after the modification(s).
