So, what is the .Net Framework anyway and who needs to have it? I have .net 1.0 and .net 3.5. I used to have .net 2.0 on my computer but ran ccleaner once and it disappeared on me. I run xp home sp3. Also, is there anywhere one can go to find out (aside from an individual google search) what microsoft services are necessary for a typical home user? Seems like my computer is getting clogged with more and more stuff that can only be coming from automatic updates. I have turned the auto feature off and check for updates manually now. My system is 4 years old so I got a lot of junk on it. Thanks for any help.

The .Net Framework is a set of runtime libraries that is used by some applications. Usually, if the application requires the .Net Framework it will either have installation instructions that say to install the .Net Framework, or will automatically install it if it is not there. I recommend leaving it on your system, but if you like you can get the Process Explorer from Sysinternals, it can help you determine if any of the apps you run are using the .Net Framework.

I saw a list of the minimal services required once, but I can’t find it now. Perhaps someone else recalls it.
