      I actually think this is both real and a boon.

      Way back I used to be an AS/400 analyst. That system slowly gained the ability to run more and more Unix software, and in the face of a lot of scepticism and resistance from the system designers. Posix, then shell commands, eventually they hosted Linux as a subsystem, all running natively. And it was great! It really opened the system up and became an area of innovation and user choice, beyond the original system tools.

      That’s what I suspect is going on here. Microsoft has all their original system management tools and those are fine as far as they go. However I’ve found that by selectively adding certain Unix commands, previously ported to the PC, adds a lot of power and flexibility to the system. Text processing is an area where Bash shell commands really excel and Windows is relatively weak, for example.

      Although the timing is suspicious, all the other signs point to a legitimate tech announcement.
