Chaps,
I recently applied the Microsoftupgrade build 10.0.14393.0 and have had some problems.
The most frustrating wasthat you would not be given a password prompt when returning from hibernation. Fortunatelyat the bottom right hand corner there was an option to restart the PC where a loginprompt was offered. No matter what you try (ESC, Enter, pg up or pg dn, mouse clicks) nothing brings up the password prompt and a restart is the only way out.
I was not able to find a fixon the Internet and I was suspicious that having only one user registered to use my Notebook might be causing an issue. I tried creating another user in ‘Settings’ butfound that I was not able open the screen. You just got a series of dots on a blank screen. However I was able to create a new uservia the Administrator’s Command (Win-X) with the command ‘net user /add’
I’m now given the passwordprompt when returning from hibernation. Interesting when I removed the new user, the original problem return. It looks like I will have to keep the second user until Microsoft comes up with a fix one day.
I suspect that a service isnot starting but I’ve no idea which one.
Anyhow I thought I wouldpass on my experience and hopes it helps somebody else.
Cheers

Chaps,
Unfortunately this problem has returned, so the fix I posted a few days ago is no longer valid. After working okay for two days, I now don’t get a login prompt when returning fro hibernation.
If you are the only person registered to use the PC then the only work around I have found is:-
1- Run netplwiz from Win-R and un-click the option ‘Users must enter a username and password to use this computer’. This removes the requirement for a password on a full re-boot.
2- Change (or check) ‘Require a password when returning from sleep’ for the ‘Sign in Options’ for your account in ‘Settings’. (it’s the top line). You then reliably get a password prompt returning from hibernation.
Interestingly if you set it to ‘Never’ the PC returns from hibernation without the need for a password and if you set it to ‘require a password’ then the prompt pops up every time even though a full re-boot doesn’t require the password.
I cannot always get into the ‘Sign in Options’ so there obviously is a problem in the accounts section on my PC and I suspect that both problems are related. Its hit or miss for me when trying to set any ‘Sign in Options’ and a full re-boot seems to correct it, but only for a while.
Anyhow, I thought I’d give you an update and ask that if anybody has had similar problems and has any pointers I’d appreciate some feed back.
Thanks.

Hi Dave,
Start ‘Settings’ and then go to ‘Accounts’ and then to ‘Sign In Options’ (on the left hand side of the screen). It is the top line saying ‘If you have been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again’.
Do you have the same issue?
Cheers.

PS
I’ve also found this site (below) and after following the advice offered, such as running gpedit.msc I seem to have got my login working. I’ve now turned on my password on a re-boot and also when returning from hibernation. It has worked the last few times but as I’ve experienced before, its too soon to start celebrating just yet, but it looks promising. -

It’ works when my PC wakes from sleep, but as I have a desktop I can’t vouch for what happens when it comes out of hibernation. Though the text doesn’t seem to distinguish between the two.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 29, 2017 at 9:10 pm #1590000Chaps, the latest from my end is that it is still a bit hit or miss whether you get a password prompt returning from hibernation. So I have decided to run gpedit.msc again and turn off (ie, make it ‘not defined’) everything that I set the other day. I have run netplwz again and clicked the box ‘Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer’ and have in Settings–> Accounts–> ‘Sign in options’ to Never require a password when returning from sleep.
It seems to be working now (yeah I know ….. I’ve said that before). It returns from hibernation every I have tried it. There is no password prompt of course, but at least it does return without a re-boot and it still requires a password on a full re-boot. Its not what I wanted but a comprise that for the moment is working.
……. and just to eliminate a corrupted profile, I setup a new user and tried using that login. The same issue was present so I’m sticking to what I have outlined above and keeping my fingers crossed.

Hmmmmmm. I’m not sure where to go from here. The solution maybe locked away somewhere in REGEDIT but where I don’t know. I think your best bet would be to explore GPEDIT.MSC
Try this link …

I read a comment saying that this problem is hardware specific, so it might just come down to experimenting until you find something that works for you. Just remember the steps you go through so that you can back them off if need be. One change might be turning an option on only to have it turned off with another. Anyhow let me know how you get on. Cheers and good luck.

Dave – It’s a Sleep option.
1. Right-click on Start.
2. Select Run in the Power menu.
3. When the Run dialog appears, copy/paste explorer shell:::{025A5937-A6BE-4686-A844-36FE4BEC8B6D} into the text entry box then click on the OK button.
4. When the Power Options dialog appears, click on the Require a password on wake-up link in the left-hand Navigation Pane.
5. In the Password protection on wake-up area mid-way down, select the Don’t require a password option.
6. Click on the Save changes button.
7. Close the Power Options dialog. That should be it.
Hope this helps…

AskWoody MVPJanuary 31, 2017 at 9:12 am #1590137I can not find the Require a password on wake-up
I think it’s because we’re on different builds and Microsoft keep tinkering with the GUI. Let’s do it the old-fashioned way using Control Panel… that should be the same (I hope).
1. Right-click on Start.
2. Select Control Panel in the Power menu.
3. When Control Panel opens, double-click on Power Options.
4. When the Power Options dialog appears, click on the Require a password on wake-up link in the left-hand Navigation Pane.
5. In the Password protection on wake-up area mid-way down, select the Don’t require a password option.
6. Click on the Save changes button.

AskWoody MVPJanuary 31, 2017 at 11:00 am #1590156Right, I’ve looked around some more and it appears that you must be on Version 1607… and Microsoft removed the Require a password on wake-up link from Power Options. Grrr!
Have a look at the ‘Turn on or off password after sleep in Windows 10 via Settings’ section in this article (i.e. Method 1) or, if you want an even more comprehensive guide, have a look at this TenForums article.
Hope this helps…

AskWoody MVPFebruary 1, 2017 at 3:28 pm #1590282Dave, the problem I have is that I’m on a different version (1511) to you so see different settings to you. As a result I can only read what’s written in the TenForums article I quoted.
Perhaps Require Sign-in on Wakeup is set for All Users instead of just for you? Did you try Step 4 of Option 5 and download the REG file to disable Require Sign-on?
Note that once you download the .REG file, you can’t just double-click on it because it needs to be carried out as Administrator. Instead, do this:
1. In Cortana’s Search box, type regedit.
2. When regedit appears as a search result, right-click on it and choose Run as administrator.
3. Click on the Yes button when the User Account Control dialog appears.
4. When the Registry Editor opens, use File > Import to navigate to, select and open the .REG file you downloaded.
5. Click the OK button to dismiss the confirmation dialog.
5. Close the Registry Editor and restart your device.Hope this helps…
