I note and waited for the WS discussion about the new system that MS is now imposing on us Win7 users.It will be easy for me to wait two weeks for Susanne B.’s valued opinion,BECAUSE I NO LONGER GET ANY NOTIFICATION from dear old MS that updates are available at all.I have my computer set(from the beginning)to notify me about updates,but let ME choose…etc.
Does anyone have this experience?And is there anything to do about it?If so,WHAT??

I decided I am not tech smart enough(after reading all those articles you kindly recommended,I shall just wait for Ms.S.B.
The article that was referred to about downloading those 2 updates(…369 and …605)refer to Win 7 64 bit machines.No mention of 32-s such as mine.That just adds to my confusion.But,thanks very much for taking the time to respond to me!!!Much obliged!!!

During the past week I worked on a customer’s Win7 Ultimate 32bit desktop PC that initially was failing to boot up (no boot device found errors even w/ bootable CD in DVD drive). After fitting new SATA cables for the HDD and DVD drives, and cleaning the contacts on the VGA card and RAM chips the PC booted OK (but I had to go into setup to set the time/date).

After virus/malware scanning and updating programs I checked “Control PanelPrograms and FeaturesView Installed Updates”; there were very few updates listed for about the past twelve months. I set WU checking for updates but aborted after five hours of no activity, rebooted and set WU checking for updates again but still no result after three hours. Attempts to install KB947821 (“System Updates Readiness Tool”) also failed with a never-ending “Searching this computer for updates…” message, and “WSUS Offline” also failed to install any updates.

After further reboots/retries I installed/ran “Tweaking.com Windows Repair“; there were no problems with “reparse points” or “environment variables”, WR asked for a chkdsk scan (which I did), sfc found no problems, so I rebooted to Safe Mode w/ networking and ran the repairs (defaults) one of which resets Windows Update.

After WR finished and I booted back into normal Win7 KB947821 installed successfully, and I was able to install updates using “WSUS Offline”. Then WU also completed checking for updates after less than five minutes and installed about eight “Important” and about five “Optional” updates.

You can always open up the Windows Update screen from the Start menu and then click on “Check for updates”. It will take several hours these days, mine have just been notified after 4 hours, although without actively checking for them the updates simply weren’t appearing as they used to do within a few minutes of switching the machine on. The only thing that will speed things up consistently is installing the monthly speed-up update but it’s too soon to be doing that this month, hang on until Woody Leonhard and Susan Bradley confirm they’re safe to install. The only reason I searched for the updates on one machine (while the other has them set to “Never” so as to eliminate the impact on performance of MSE and the computer generally of the WU service searching for days) is so I can see what is being offered in comparison to the updates being discussed on the forums.

When I check for updates, it can take hours but mostly NEVER responds. I always attempt this after I get notification that new updates are available. Actually, I try to install the new updates but that also takes hours or never completes (the download aspect).

What bothers me is that on a recent shutdown, WU announced that it was installing 2 updates, that I never downloaded (a later check indicated is was 2 of the previous 10 that were indicated to be available but never downloaded; download progress ALWAYS stayed at 0%).

I then rebooted to see what happened, and it then went through finish install of the 2 updates (starting at 35% complete moving up to 100%). However, it did not go into Windows 7 (a 32-bit older node), but rebooted AGAIN.

Upon checking, 2 of the former 10 installed and 2 failed plus 2 were dropped from the list as cancelled. What in blazes is going on here?

Now the next blow…

Once again, I received notification that 8 updates were available. I tried to download them but the download NEVER finishes (stuck at 0% progress; operation cancelled as before when stuck in this state for an extended period of time, sometime hours).

The next time I booted (cold boot from power-on), a new operation occurred that I had never seen before. In a pre-boot step, updates were installed, with messages flying by like crazy, including numbers for updates in a package roll-up. These messages were coming out on a single line on the display (no message scrolling).

Then, a reboot with messages at the early stage with 6 updates applied (progress started at 35% completing at 100%). Finally, the reboot progressed to normal Windows 7 startup after 100% achieved (which is -or was- the normal progression).

One again, what in blazes is going on here? There was NO option to select which update to download/install, and success/failure had to be determned from the history report.

Does someone have an explaination for all of ths (maybe Suzanne is working on that)?

Actually,I have kind of similar experience as of late.I have to check for update running for several hours.When it does go on finally,the download percentage is always 0 for hours on end,until it starts to install.MS is just a lot of continuous headache.I walk a lot,and there are many coffee houses in this town,and I see many people using computers while there-ALL OF THEM APPLE-S.There is a reason for that.(See above and many more)

I am still waiting for Ms.S.B.’s advice,but since there is no sign from MS that there is a new update this month,IN SPITE OF ME ASKING FOR IT,AND RUNNING SEARCH FOR LONG,I was wondering if re-setting my computer from “notify me about downloads but let me decide when and what to download”to AUTOMATIC DOWNLOAD,especially in the light of Ms have had take the choice away anyway!!!!
Could one of you more technically knowledgeable kindly let me know whether this could MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Jim, I suspect that the OP – macko1944 – is hoping for a ‘Patch Watch’ update from Susan Bradley about how the first Cumulative Update has gone for Windows 7 users following this month’s Patch Tuesday, i.e. October 11. I think the jury’s still out whilst results are still coming in?

Well,I have reset my computer to automatic downloads,STILL I GET NO UPDATES AFTER SEVERAL HOURS.The two update items suggested KB…369 and KB…605 when I look it up at the download center are all for 64 or higher machines,whereas mine is a 32.So now I am totally clueless.Even if Ms.Bradley comes up with the much awaited suggestions,my machine doesn’t seem to oblige,short of maybe trying to download each suggested one ONE AT A TIME.That would probably take me a whole day,the way these downloads have been going even when I did get them.When changing to automatic download,the GWX Control Panel immediately warned about Win 10 stuff may be coming.So,one really doesn’t know what to do in my situation.For now,other than waiting,I shall do NOTHING,because I can’t do otherwise.And thank you for telling me about the reply techniques.Sorry,I did not know,now I do and will follow the suggestion next time.This comment however is sad as it is,a general situation.Thanks to all the volunteers for taking the time to respond!!!

All you can really do is ensure that your computer is set to install downloads automatically and then carry on as usual. If there are updates for your particular system they will eventually be offered and installed, assuming that the computer is left on for long enough. Obviously if you only have it on for a few minutes each day, for example, then the updating service is unlikely to kick in. You can only install what is offered, however, and I wouldn’t worry unduly if there aren’t any updates to install just as long as you have it set to install and the computer is on long enough for it to work.
