You have been able to do that for years. When did you notice the ability?

      cheers, Paul

I just noticed this 1-2 days ago. probably only appears for the OP (original poster)Screen-Shot-02-27-22-at-09.05-AM

Someone needs to create a tutorial of the mechanics of posting on this forum.  It appears that I’m not the only one lacking that knowledge.

I believe this is very new. A few other forums have such. Probably a fantastic new growing trend to ease the use of forums. I also believe that if “I” can figure out how to use it it probably doesn’t need a manual! 🙂 😀

While the function has been there since the early days of The Lounge, I believe the facility was only available to moderators, not for users to access themselves? 🙂

If it has been around, I wish people would use it to mark their posts!

      • #2428200

Even if a thread has been marked Resolved, people can still post to it.  I’ve done it myself.

Of course! But it does tell the viewer that the OP is no longer looking for an answer, Though you can bet that people will often add an ALTERNATE solution! So the thread can be still very much alive, and useful! 🙂

      hmmmmmmmmmmm

don’t know how I could have missed it, and I have never seen a post marked as resolved or unresolved. Must be blind? Blame it on being 80? Part of brain missing?(probably!) Dropped on floor when I was born? (that’s ALWAYS a good excuse!)

So nobody’s used it since 2019?????????

      • #2428427

So nobody’s used it since 2019?

No one said that. It’s used often since years ago.

The one who starts a thread could also have the option to declare it “Resolved”, for all to see. I am not comfortable with the fact that someone else can do that, as it could lead to mistakes due to misunderstandings of what was the originator of the thread was looking for, in its totality.

Anything can be misunderstood – like my post. Meant to perhaps be slightly humorous.

Only the OP original poster can mark a thread in any way. If the OP is correct, then the status will likely be correct. If not, then not, and hopefully others will post to that thread in an attempt to provide a correct answer.

It seems that most OPs never update a thread’s status anyway.

            • #2428518

From Susan’s and Kirsty’s replies it does not look like the thread originator can change the status of the thread. My comment was based on their replies and the fact that I’ve never, in close to four years of hanging around here almost daily, heard from anyone that one can do this if one is not an MVP at AskWoody. Or I have ever seen a button at the top, middle or bottom of the original comment with an inscription that reads something like: “To declare this thread “Resolved”, press me.”

At the beginning of one of the threads you have started, in the upper left corner, find Resolution: with a drop down menu offering  none, not a question, not resolved or resolved

YOU have to have started the thread and YOU have to be logged in for it to appear.

Do you see what I mean – on this one I marked it “resolved” because it IS resolved for ME, yet the conversation continues and that is just fine! Learning should be continuous!!!

      • #2428531

So Susan can take this out off her “to do” list now?

Sheez, Susan! You really need to have a talk with yourself, now and then!

I believe Susan was saying that “creating a how-to manual for using this forum” was the thing on her to-do list.

    • #2428691

I’ve been checking my old threads and setting them to resolved where needed.  In the process I was finding threads that I started a while back, like 2017 that I had already set to resolved.  I didn’t go back any further than that at the time but it proves the point that I was able to do that back then and probably even before.  As you can see, I’m not an MVP.

Then I must have missed it totally. Thanks!

      • #2428778

How can you tell it was you that set the topics to Resolved, rather than done by a moderator?

        • #2428799

For myself, even though I am nearing 80,
          a) my memory is still intact
b)I only discovered this feature less than a week ago.

For others… dunno. Perhaps hypnotizing them and checking their memory under duress?

Please be very careful what you take seriously! 🙂

        • #2428927

          Kirsty,

My threads that were already marked as Resolved were the ones I remember marking, and even if I didn’t remember, they were threads I would have picked to mark as resolved because I knew they were resolved at that time.

It may have happened at some time, but I don’t remember ever having a moderator mark one of my threads as Resolved.

          • #2428957

I don’t remember ever having a moderator mark one of my threads as Resolved.

On many, many occasions, the work of the moderator included marking such topics as closed when it was apparent, or when the topic became the target of spam comments etc. It’s one of a large number of tasks that were undertaken manually, behind the scenes 🙂

            • #2428963

Marking a topic “closed” to prevent further posts is usually only done by a mod.

This is completely different – it is marking a thread as “solved”, yet allowing further posts. I doubt a mod would ever do that. That should probably only be done by the OP.

            • #2428979

My apology. I inadvertently used the word “closed”, when I should have used “resolved”. My bad – please forgive me.

            • #2428980

Ah! Cool! But this doesn’t prevent further posts whereas that apparently did? I think mods can close or lock a thread to prevent further posts. You can also simply delete a thread if something really offensive was posted.

            • #2428981

              this doesn’t prevent further posts

Correct – resolved doesn’t prevent new posts (like closed does) – it does help people to know that the question is not still needing help though 🙂

I think mods can close or lock a thread

              Correct again!

While we’re having a discussion of mods I should point out that I feel that mods are a very essential part of a forum in maintaining its useful health. Thanks!

I have seen some forums, particularly linux, go wonky. It makes a massive difference.
