      @Woody

      Welcome back to the USA. A suggestion from a member of the “Live Steam” community. Go south a ways from Nashville, to Columbia, TN, and then to Maury County Park to ride on the steam railroad trains of the Mid-South Live Steamers. Its Free and its Fun!

      Hi Woody. Sorry to hear you’re leaving our part of the world but all the best to you and your family! Enjoy your new home!

    • #53504

      Just wondering, does the defcon level ever go below 2?? While I think this is a valuable service, if the level never drops below 2 or 3, what’s the point??? Just wondering.

      GOOD LUCK Buddy – hope all goes well for your move. Hope to see you back soon.

    • #53506

      Welcome back, Woody!

    • #53507

      Good luck with the move, Woody. You provide an invaluable service through this website, wherever you are, and I thank you for that.

      Best regards,

      M.

      Woody

      I’m a long time follower and fan. My wife and I used to spend a few months each winter just outside Chalong Bay–at a place called The Best Mansion–and frequented The Flintstone Bakery before your wife acquired it.

      I know it’s a big move to make, and wish you all the best on your new journey.

    • #53513

      Hey Woody!

      Why are you leaving Thailand , Woody?
      Like you , I’m an expat but living in north Thailand but no way I would want to go back to that socialist police state.

    • #53515

      I hope your trip goes as smoothly as possible. Welcome to the Volunteer State: may you and your family be very happy here. I’ve been in Middle Tennessee for almost 20 years now. It is a great place to live and raise a family. Thanks for all the work you do to keep your readers safe and in-the-know. We’ll all still be here when you get settled in.

      Hello Woody!

      I am letting you know that Apple has been deleting Every post i make in their discussions on Mavericks not supporting PCIe Sonett or eSATA PCi express cards for eSATA. I read your article. I contact acted Apple and they will and can’t help. You should do a followup on Apple how they delete users posts in help forums that ask anything about it. I am really upset over it. Been a Mac fan for years, but after all my external data wrecked, raids wrecked from G-Tech, Promise, Lacie, now DAT Optic i am corners. I rely on my raids for film and music business. Apple’s failure to address problem or acknowledge it is a replay of the Mac overheating issue years back. This is really BIG i mean blocking users from posting a bug or warning others not to update until Apple fixes problem? Apple replied to one post taken down with some high grade employee ranting to me about “You expect apple to test every third party vendors raid cards? Thats the raid card or HD manufactures problems” “I have deleted your posts and blocked you from posting as per our discussion rights at apple” “If you want a fix complain to the companies” “Apple does NOT support any eSATA and will not in the future”

      Thats a quote from apple!! Got to love them! Wish Steve was around. Tim Cook is a clown, needs big red shoes and a nose. in the customer world people are calling him “Sculley” like the other CEO that ruined apple.

      Kind Regards,
      Betaman

      @Rick

      It was a difficult decision. I’m, uh, not fond of American politics. But Thai politics has gone to hell, too.

      Mostly, my wife wants to get her US citizenship, and try working in the US. And we want to raise our son in the US. So I’ll give it a try…

      @Corbin –

      The past we’ve had (very) few occasions for MS-DEFCON 1 and 5. But it’s rare.

    • #53519

      @Susan

      Thanks.. We’ll still be visiting Phuket a couple of times a year…

    • #53520

      @axkramer –

      I’ll do that!

    • #53521

      I remember DEFCON 1 maybe a couple of years ago, when there were a lot of Widnows patching disasters going on. And sometime within I think the past year, a DEFCON 5, indicating at the time things were about as safe and stable as they get. So these conditions do occur. Rarely, but I’ve seen them happen.

      Speaking of a DEFCON 1, I lost my DSL service for a couple of hours this afternoon (Chicago time). It’s AT&T DSL. They’re back up now. This too is very rare, but it happens.

      What’s the T-Shirt logo from awhile back say? I think it’s “Tech Happens” This is by no means restricted to one technology or one carrier or one OS vendor. It’s good for me to know that with Woody, Windows Secrets, Susan Bradley and others, I can get updates on what’s working and what’s not at any given time.

      That is, unless AT&T is down again 😉 !

      Hey Woody,

      Welcome (back) to the (must… resist… Beatle’s song…) USA.

      Too bad the weather’s so terrible right now…

    • #53523

      Dear Woody, we will be missing you here in Phuket! However, we will stay attached to your website and diligently follow your MS-Defcon as always. All the best to you and your family at your new home, Guenter (we met at one of OB’s birthday events).

      @RC –

      Heh heh heh,,,

    • #53525

      Dear Woody, Welcome back to the greatest country on earth, still, in spite of the politicians. One has to just ignore it and focus on what’s important. (like Microsoft politics 😉

    • #53526

      Welcome back to the U S of A! Hope the move went smoothly and the jet lag has taken off 😉

    • #53527

      Welcome back to the US of A, Woody! Just to make sure you stay in the loop… Is This considered important? http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/20/5326844/hp-brings-back-windows-7-by-popular-demand

      Bought a refurbished Windows 10 64-bit, currently updated to 22H2. Have broke the AC adapter cord going to the 8.1 machine, but before that, coaxed it into charging. Need to buy new adapter if wish to continue using it.

      I’m very surprised. It seems like you just moved to a new home in Kathu and I thought your wife had started a new business there as well. Anyway best of luck to you and your family. I can understand you wanting your son raised in the states or at least partialy raised there. Got have infuences of more than just Thai culture and education. Are you going to leave CRISP running?

    • #53529

      Welcome back to the USA, Woody!

      I’ve been a HUGE fan, and reader of your books, for YEARS! I’ve lost track of how many people I’ve told NOT to “automatic update” unless and until Woody says it’s OK.

    • #53530

      @Ty –

      I’m confused, too.

      Yep, CRISP is still up and running. I’ll be back to visit Phuket in six months.

    • #53531

      @Bill

      Naw, it’s just marketing. HP’s been doing it all along. Ed Bott has a good riposte, and I’ve been covering both sides in TechBrief.

    • #53532

      @Q –

      Jet lag is still horrendous. You’d think with all the traveling I’ve done that it’d be easy, but it’s an absolute bear. 12 time zones doesn’t help.

      We’re living out of suitcases, and still looking for a place to live – in VERY cold weather. Not fun.

    • #53533

      Nashville is a great city. My wife lived there for several years and I’ve been there many times. And if you get down Atlanta way (it’s not very far)… it would be my honor to spring for the beverages.

    • #53534

      Thanks, everybody. Just a quick update.

      We’re still looking for a house, so I’ve been working from a hotel room. Blech. It snowed last night – my son had never seen snow. We’re sorting through myriad options and hassles; moving halfway around the world does have some, er, challenges.

      Will keep you posted….

    • #53535

      Welcome back Woody. You probably know this already, but this is not the same U.S. of A. that it was when you left. Good luck to you and your family!

      Being 20 something in the 70's was so much better than being 70 something in the insane 20's
    • #53536

      @Charlie

      Yep, when I left, George W Bush had just been elected.

      Things have changed a tad….
