A relative has a Windows 8.1 home PC that we upgraded to Win 10 home 22H2 by downloading from MS. It was set up originally to sign in as an MS account.

Recently when using the left side page list on a PDF file we kept getting a popup from MS that said something like “you need to enter your password as you are accessing secure data.”

In trying to get rid of this nuisance I changed the profile to a local, administrative account. That stopped the popups.

However, now when I sign into http://www.outlook.com it goes directly in without entering ID/pswd (even though I am a local acct). If I try to sign out of outlook I get the MSN screen that says I am signed out BUT I can go right back in without signing in again.

On the upper right corner of outlook web when I open the sign out box there is a sub list of my acct ID and another item “sign in with a different account”. On my acct ID there is a “…” option which if clicked says, “sign out and forget”. Then on clicking, that option changes to “signing out of this account” and then a long delay where sometimes it actually signs out and sometimes it does not. However, once I sign back in, the normal sign out (at the very top right where it says “sign out” stops working again.)

In contrast my Win 10 22H2 home with factory install immediately signs out by clicking the upper right normal “sign out” box.

I know this might seem picky but if there is a bug here there are probably others and if a person is travelling and not aware that clicking the normal sign out really does not sign out and the laptop is stolen then a thief could potentially have access to a lot of stuff. I would have never been aware of this if I had not been using the PDF list feature that kicked off the popup.

Compare cookie settings in the browsers.

There seems to be 2 significant cookies.

On the errant PC that had Win 10 downloaded from MS and in the auto sign in condition that goes directly in without asking for an ID/password:

      Live.com 3 cookies  Msn.com 1 cookie

After clicking sign in and going directly in:

      Live 94 Msn 1

After signing out upper right sign out button:

      Live 88 Msn 23

After using the alternate sign out that takes a long time and sometimes works and before signing in:

      Live 85 Msn 1

After signing in where asks for ID/password:

      Live 100 Msn 1

After signing out where had asked for ID/password:

Live 91 Msn 22 and this one failed sign out

On the factory installed Win 10 PC before sign in “

      Live 93 Msn 28

      After signing in with ID/Password

      Live 101 Msn 27

After normal sign out using box upper right

      Live 92 Msn 28

I notice on the factory installed Win 10 that Msn count seems to decrement on sign in and increment on sign out but on the other PC the Msn count seems to only stay at 1 except on the sign out that always fails. Very suspicious.

As always thanks for your help “b”.

I also meant to add I have Edge set to clear cookies on closing but it doesn’t clear any of these on either PC. I also tried the “Remove All” on the settings menu and it removed all the cookies but did not fix the auto sign in problem.

After some thought it just occurred to me that I am overthinking this. Surely somewhere in Microsoft there is 1 indicator (a bit where 0=not signed in and 1=signed in) that is not being cleared on sign out from my older PC.

Whether this is the Edge cookie or the Registry or in a MS server or a secret Windows file on my C drive – I know not.  Surely there is a MS programmer reading this that knows where that indicator is and where it is set in MS code. Sounds like an easy fix to me.

Both my PC’s have the same OS build but the errant one has the Windows Feature Experience Pack 19045 and the one that works has 19041.

I don’t know why I did not think of this but I tried on Chrome and Chrome works perfectly.

I checked Edge and it is showing up to date.

Ok, so must be Edge in that later Feature Experience where the indicator is!!
