• Outlook Content Suddenly Missing

Today Outlook 2019 suddenly stopped displaying the contents of my email.  I can see the emails but all of the content is missing except maybe for the top line.  It was working 10 minutes before it was not.  I can’t see email content I could see an hour ago nor new emails just arriving.

I have Win 10.  I have restarted and rebooted.  Mystified.

    Whattheckhappened?

    Thanks.

looks like this started yesterday and still causing problems. Your not the only one, even Brink on Ten Forums is having issues with outlook.

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...
    • #2364288

…. could this be a server error, or, unavailability?

    • #2364298

Same – Updated office 2019 pro plus, and windows 10 Pro

After reboot, outlook wouldnt display emails no matter what i tried.

Rolled back office 2019 version and all is working.

Office issue (to list upwards) after office issue (not displaying emails)

Is anything tested anymore in MS

I’m having the same issue. Outlook 2019 worked yesterday but not today. The message preview area shows text from emails but opening an email results in a blank message. Once in a while I see a brief flash of an item from an email then it’s gone. I’m running Win10 Pro 1909 and haven’t updated the software in a couple of weeks.

Many victims on Twitter have solved this by reverting to previous build 13901.20462 of Office 365/2019 by running the following single line at an Admin Command Prompt:

      "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.13901.20462

I can read emails using “view in browser” option.

I followed up on the add-ins comment. I don’t have adobe but I do have “Norton AntiSpam Outlook Plugin.” I wonder if Norton’s latest update is causing a problem. I haven’t updated anything else in my add-in list (as far as I know).

      I only have 4 active add-ins:
      –  Microsoft Exchange
      –  Norton AntiSpam
      –  OneNote Notes
      –  Outlook Social Connector 2016

Yes, seeing it in New Zealand on multiple clients. The rollback DOS command in an earlier post here resolves this (then disable Office updates). Also has the autocomplete issue (incomplete autocomplete window with big font) from earlier this month. Putting clients on Outlook Web Access while Ms fixes this…

We’ve identified the root cause and are applying a fix, which will reach affected users over the next 3 to 4 hours. Users will need to restart the Outlook client to apply the fix after it’s received. We expect to restore service to affected users by May 12, 2021, at 3:00 AM UTC.

FWIW, I opened the mail options in Outlook and changed the “New mail messages” font in Signatures and Stationery to black and was able to see the last line of an email. The rest of the message was still blank. Changing other fonts did not bring up the remainder of the message.

When MS has a fix will it be automatically updated even with auto updates off and updates not downloaded or installed until I check for updates? The Win10 update page mentions “We’ll ask you to download updates, except when updates are required to keep Windows running smoothly.”

It will be an Office fix, not a Windows Update.

Title: Issue affecting viewing email content in Outlook
User Impact: Users may be unable to view email message content within Outlook.
More info: Impact is specific to the Outlook client and users with access to other protocols, such as Outlook on the web or the Outlook mobile app, can view message content in those platforms as a potential workaround while our fix is applied.
Current status: We’ve identified the underlying cause of impact and are applying a fix. This fix will reach all affected users incrementally over the course of the next four-to-five hours. Once users receive the fix, they will need to restart their email client to apply the fix. In some circumstances, users may need to restart their client a second time for the changes to take effect. We expect to complete this process and restore service for all affected users by May 12, 2021, at 3:00 AM UTC.
We encourage affected users who are able to do so to leverage the workarounds described above in the “more info” section of this post while we complete the process of fixing this problem.
Scope of impact: This issue could affect any user attempting to view an email message in the Outlook client.
Root cause: A recent change to systems that facilitate text display management for content within the Outlook client caused impact.

Hi Susan — If officec2rclient.exe is a component of Office 365 ProPlus, why do I have it at all if I am using Office 2019? I would never have thought that I would have experienced the “inability to read messages in Outlook” bug that was affected by a Microsoft server that I didn’t know I was connected to. It was never my intention to run Office over the Internet… 🙁

I just received the fix. I ran Windows Update and then opened Outlook and I could real all my e-mails again. There is peace in the valley.

If you run Windows Update then you get all the May updates.  I am trying to pause Windows 10 May updates.  Why doesn’t it work just to update Microsoft Office 2019?

I already had Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday updates paused, and Outlook 2019 still tanked until Microsoft rolled out its mysterious remote fix.

My outlook is working.  I did not click to update anything.  Microsoft just did whatever they wanted I guess.  When I open Outlook just now it is working.

It appears it was an Outlook Click-to-Run problem only. The workaround of using a web client or using the officec2rclient.exe utility to roll back today’s update indicate this. All of my installations of MSI Outlook 2010 and 2007 were fine. But 100% of my newer CTR Outlook 2016 (2 of 2) were unusable. My Outlook 2016 CTR is working now.

This bug hit me and I fumbled around reinstalling Office 2016 Click-to-Run which fixed the problem.  But only after trying 5 other things.

But I had updates to Office 2016 disabled and Windows Update disabled, so I don’t know how I got the bug.

Of course, I should have checked this forum first or here: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2021/05/microsoft-patch-tuesday-may-2021-edition/

I recommend disabling Click-to-Run updates anyway, so you can control them and update at a convenient time a bit more towards the end of each month.

The bug had nothing to do with Addons.  What a zoo.

My Outlook 2019 got nailed by this. What’s curious about it for me is that I have what I *thought* was a non-Exchangey, non-cloud ‘local client machine’ version of Office 2019. Nope. It had the exact symptoms everyone else saw where you couldn’t read the body of the e-mail.

Before I searched the problem on-line and got pointed to some sites by Microsoft’s ridonculous twitter support, which also had at least one dead link to a descriptive fix, I first tried Microsoft’s “Quick” repair via the Programs and Features, and second, also the full reinstallation. Neither worked.

The upside to the full reinstallation is that it actually worked to correctly reinstall the Office Suite, although I was nervous that the $50 MS Office license I’d bought long ago would actually function. It did function, and the Product Key worked to reactivate the Office installation.

But the reinstallation didn’t solve the missing contents of Outlook 2019 message bodies. Microsoft’s mysterious remote fix made it work again. Charming. Not.

Solution is to manually update Office from the File -> User Account.
Then click Update button. It was solved yesterday.
