Do Linksys WRT54G routers have “adjustable” power output? I just installed a Netgear USB wireless adapter in the next-door neighbor’s PC, so she could use my Internet connection until WOW gets hers going again. The connection is only showing 2-3 bars out of a possible 5. I’d like to crank the output of the Linksys up enough for her to get 4 bars consistently. I’ve done that with a 2Wire modem/router, but nothing else. Linksys is using the stock firmware, if that matters.

See wrt54g boost signal output – Live Search for links on boosting power output.

IMO, even though you may be able to do this I think I’d spend the money on a newer range boosted router. When you start boosting power through hacks on any device you are liable to reduce the lifetime of the device and may increase heat and/or health hazards.

Wouldn't I have to buy "matching" wireless adapters to be able to use the range-boosted routers?

I come from the wireless world, and when I started having problems with reception on my deck through e-glass I changed the antenna’s out to a higher gain antenna, that you can get at most computer stores. the best part is they are cheap and they work. I not only have great coverage outside, but also great coverage inside a tender house that is also on the deck. Not to mention the better coverage inside the house as well.

If you load DD-WRT or Tomato firmware onto that Linksys you can crank up the power until the smoke comes out of those little ICs inside.
