Preparing computer for BIOS update from within Windows 10-disabling bitlocker?

In the instructions for preparing my computer for the BIOS update, I’m instructed to disable bitlocker. I never set a bitlocker recovery key, so will I be OK just disabling & re-enabling it, or will it ask me for a recovery key & lock me out when I don’t have it?

Create a recovery key before doing anything else, then create an image backup. Then you can consider updating the BIOS.

Why are you considering updating the BIOS? Is there some problem that needs to be fixed?

When I tried to install 20H2 the install stopped at 14 minutes, and I got a message saying that the BIOS wasn’t compatible with Windows 10 and I should uninstall it. At first I was baffled, since I knew my machine would be unusable if I did that, and I had to do a little research to find out that I should update it.

You can’t uninstall the BIOS, so that message may not be accurate.
Are you sure that is the exact message?

Can you try the install again and then take a pic with a phone?

How do I create an image backup? Also, it was the preparation to install that stopped, not the install itself, and it stopped at 14%, not 14 minutes.

Use one of the 3rd party backup apps and an external USB hard disk.

In my experience, you need to create a Recovery Key, one way or another with the options shown on screen, or you can’t progress with the encryption.
The key is necessary so you can access a drive if you forget the password or that a password isn’t working at that time for what ever reason.
Could the advice to disable Bitlocker be to do so so if Bitlocker has actually been set up?

Yes, that’s the message. I was feeling a little overwhelmed when I posted about it, so I forgot the 2nd sentence and misremembered that I had to figure out about upgrading myself.

I know I need to be careful about updating the BIOS, that’s why I came here to ask the knowledgeable folks such as yourself about it :-).

OK, now I’m confused. Yes, I understood what the recovery key is for and why I would need to create one. I didn’t see any text in your link that was about creating a recovery key, only about suspending Bitlocker protection before updating the BIOS and then resuming it afterwards. Did I miss something?

BitLocker locked my drive after a BIOS update

HP updated BIOS which turned on BitLocker and locked and encrypted my drive. I never set up BitLocker so I don’t have the key or a password. . . . .

Bitlocker isn’t supposed to be supported in Windows 10 Home, yet HP managed to do activate it!
Another reason never to buy a HP machine.
